Landline Phones
« on: November 02, 2017, 07:20:49 pm »
We get a lot of power outages here.  We have 2 cell phones, but my husband is so bad about keeping his charged.  We have cordless phones, but naturally with no power they don’t work.  Do they still make/sell corded phones that don’t plug into an outlet just the phone jack and it works 100% when the power goes out (or am I just showing my age)?

My father lives deep in the country. When the power goes out, he calls the electric co-op to inform them. Since his cordless phone runs on electric, he has to use the old, corded rotary phone. Everytime he gets it out to use it I feel like I go back in time 40 years lol

Yes, you can still buy phones that hook up to a jack. We have one and it never goes out when the electricity does. During Hurricane Sandy, which really hit the NYC area where I live pretty hard, nobody else I knew could make
either landline or cell calls but we could still make landline calls so long as they weren't local.

I only use a cell phone, and keep it charged.

Looking for a way to charge it if/when power out.

We have one for emergencies, but do not keep it plugged in. That sounds ironic to say, doesn't it?  It used to be people had a cell phone "for emergencies". But nowadays it wouldn't do a lot of good for many people who do not even have a landline phone number.

I feel like landline phones are completely dead now. Cell phones are extremely viable as a replacement

I know a few people who still have landlines - business's too.  Seems an older generation who never got on the mobile train will always have those landlines.  Funny thing though, my Mom never wanted internet.  She never wanted cable.  Anything that required her to have a hole drilled through her home she would say NO to.  Than the phone company told her without internet hook up her bill would be X amount.  With it it would be considerably cheaper.  She opted for cheaper.  Which has saved several family members from having to go the local library when visiting her.

I have a triple play package through Time Warner, now Spectrum, that includes a landline.  The phone connects through the cable modem...  I think the landline share of the bill works out to be $45 a month.  Waste of money I think, I really need to restructure cable, it's such a waste of money.

I think landline phones will work during an outage.  During Irma, we evacuated to a home without a landline, so had NO communication with ANYONE for several days.   :(

Of course they still have landlines.  I would never give up mine.  If the towers are down, landlines still work.  Too many things to go wrong with just a cell phone.

Landlines are not really going backwards in time. Landlines are like super important in ways I really don't care to explain to a bunch of people that whine so much about their cell phones. Landlines are the best way to keep connected with your family. There are lots of issues with landlines about connectivity. Actually whenever I am away from home, I like to use a payphone to call my family. Payphones have all the wires of a landline, I know, because I saw men working on one one time.  :P  It doesn't matter, whether across the county or across the country, payphones and/or landlines are the way to go. That $.25-$.50 is well worth it.

Payphones would have to be scarce now. It’s hard to have exact cash with yourself all the time, and it seems simpler to be able to call without inserting money. I feel sorry for people who are too poor to have a mobile phone!
