I survived another Hurricane
« on: September 18, 2017, 06:36:38 pm »
I have to admitted that its never something i can get use to or comfortable with. Hurricane Irma was not something to take lightly just i have learned over many years going back to 1989 with Hugo. I do hope and wish anyone and everyone the best with any type of natural disasters.

Congrats for making it through the storm. I hope that your personal belongings were not damaged. My wife and I are thinking about selling our home in Colorado to buy something along the coast. The thought is that many people will want to move out of the area and that will deflate prices. House scraping is inevitable and new houses will pop up that may be better equipped to withstand nature's fury. Friends of ours, two families, stuck it out; one lived in Boca Raton and one lived in Miami beach. They said that the storm was absolutely amazing but each one had a fortified vault and they said that they actually had some quality family time! Sounds crazy to me. We had another friend that lives on a boat and was glad that she left-authorities are unable to find her boat.

That awesome that you made it through but don't know if I would have stayed for that one.

Good to know that you are safe. Growing up in the islands of Samoa we usually get a lot of hurricanes during the months of December to March. I have survived 3 different ones. We lived in small hut no windows just blinds made of weaved coconut leaves and so as the roof. During hurricanes we covered the entire hut with a canvas and tied them down with ropes made of coconut husks. And we don't sleep at all, we stayed together in a certain corner of the hut after we prayed we just hold on to each other all night without sleeping and brave the storm. You can hear the trees falling outside and the strong wind beating against the house raining and raining like crazy. During the aftermath, you can see clearly all the banana and coconut trees all flat you can see the airport and far away places you haven't seen before. Then you will find dead animals and looking for anything to eat without any clean water. It is sad. I can feel your pain with all the aftermath, but I am glad you are alive!!!

Congratulations! It is the reason for which I do not live in hurricane zones or
     Tornado Alley. Knowledge is power!

Glad you're safe! I live in a suburb of Houston, so parts of my town was hit pretty hard by Harvey a couple of weeks ago, it warms my heart to see meany people helping out and doing relief efforts to help everyone back on their feet. Hurricane Maria is starting to hit the Carribean AGAIN, so thoughts and prayers to them, hoping they're safe  :)

I am in Fort Myers.
We had no power [air conditioning] for 5 days.
Some people still have no power.
I have been living down here since 2002.
I heard that the other two hurricanes are not coming toward us.
our apartment complex was given 8 generators so I hope we can keep the ac on "next time" ...... unless I move north by then.

I have to admit that I have a part of me that wants to experience a hurricane. I know that sounds rather callous but there is something about nature's unbridled power that is fascinating. I've seen a tornado, lived through some severe flooding, felt an earthquake(barely) and was in Montana when Mt St Helens blew and experienced the ash fall, even saved some. The power of nature is mind boggling.
