Computer Robots or Bots

When surveys has initial questions to see if you qualify, they often ask a simple math problem or something like that to make sure you are not a "bot" or "robot".

I am assuming they do not mean R2D2 type robots, what do they refer to...Like software that completes the survey for you?  How lame!

Can anyone shed a little light on this?

 I play scrabble online, also.  I guess some folks have a "bot" that keeps them playing "bingos" (use all 7 letters at once, which gives you an extra 50 points).

What is the point? Rhetorical....I know there are people who cheat in everything out there. But what is this stuff? Some kind of crazy software? Something manual they use?

It is selfish and creepy.
