For me it isn't a matter of when I pay.  When you pay is representative of the type and quality of restaurant you are at.  Those are the things that matter to me.

I usually pay afterwards. The only time I prepay is at an establishment with a buffet.

I've never heard of paying before the meal, at a regular restaurant. It's best to pay afterward, in case you want to add on a dessert or something at the end, or an additional drink. Of course, places like Golden Corral have you pay first, since it's just a buffet so there's one price.

Yes i'm wondering the same ?  what places makes you pay first other than buffets ?

Pay After.... the only places, besides fast food, that require up front payment is at buffets like Souplantation, Hometown Buffet, Golden Corral.... in that case, then pay up front is acceptable

Of course, for us, it's after if it's a sit down restaurant.  If it's fast food, coffee shop, buffet it's always pay before but we have been to a buffet or two that you pay afterwards.    Never been to one where there was a choice.

Definitely after eating! Before could lead so much to go wrong. I'd also be anxious to leave the server a tip before because if they don't think it is good enough (even though I always tip 20%) then the service may suck

I personally prefer after the dinner because I find it more relaxing. First you're hungry so you don't need to worry about money, just eat and after that you can just easily pay the bill.

Why would you even want to pay before unless you're eating fast food?
