Where Did This Rather Bad Joke Originate?

I've read and heard this type of dialogue. Here's my example:

(Person #1 just receives a glass of tea.)

Person #2: Hi! May I have some of that tea?

Person #1: Sure. Let's each have half.

(Person #2 drinks all the tea.)

P1: You drank the entire glass! You were supposed to only have half!

P2: But my half was on the bottom, so I had to drink your half to reach mine.

Where did that "my half was on the bottom" cliché come from?

That was from the Laurel & Hardy short film "Men O War". It actually was pretty funny the way they preformed it!

Wow I love and have all the old Laurel & Hardy films on vcr tapes...  They were the best!!  Love watching them how about the one about the hard boiled eggs and nuts!!
