I don't mind the president talking to our kids, but I would rather he did it when I as a parent could be with my child so I would know what was being said, but I guess I don't have to worry because my childs school isn't showing it until they have reviewed it and then they will make a decision.

Why all this hostility towards an honorable, intelligent man who is, after all, the democratically elected President of our country? In the past, we have had presidents richly deserved America's distrust, yet none of them were ever treated with such an utter lack of respect as so many Americans have displayed towards Obama. These people are flipping out because Obama wants their children to stay in school and get an education? Because Obama wanted to appeal to children to help him make this a better country? (Apparently, he has caved in to the lunatics and removed the latter part from his speech.) After a long wallow in a moral cesspool, the U,S. has an intelligent, pragmatic leader with a good moral character; I guess many Americans feel uncomfortable with this because they are so lacking in these areas.

What a surprise! All the hysteria and fear mongering prior to the speech was dead wrong and unnecessary -.-  Who woulda thought!?

What are parents afraid of?  Obama telling them not to think on their own and pursue higher education, or dropping a few f bombs (censors would not allow our president to say anything offensive)? What's the big deal?  So the children might not understand some on the policies discussed, but you know what?  If the kids are smart and dont understand, they will come home and ask their parents to explain a policy or concept, and responsible parents will explain the policy and maybe their views and opinions.  It becomes a learning curve, advances the child's knowledge of politics and life and better prepares them for life...or you can keep that from them and allow the children to fall further behind the rest of the world and promote ignorance.

Why cant they show it at home and your parents can let you see?

It's not like the kids wont have a TV, if so they can make something special for them... but really nothing they should be doing at school. The biggest problem is those crazy rightwings who hate Obama so much they will pull the kid out of class. Now the kids will be divided and the kid suffers because we are putting politics in the classroom. The kid will be "different" to the rest, and you know how children treat the kids who are "different". The problem is not Obama speaking to the kids, the problem is forcing it on all kids in a classroom during their time to learn, and mixing politics in with school. Why not have someone else speak? A bunch of actors? The president himself is the single most political person in the country, and should not be giving any school curriculum just due to the 'politics' and controversy of the matter.

Let Obama do his speech at 6pm and the parents can sit around the TV with their children for a REAL change. haha

I don't see why people are so upset actually I think I know why but anyway.  It's totally ridiculous.  This morning I was watching CNN before work and this guy was really opposed to the speech because he thought something more sinister was going on.  Give me a break, sinister?  Like Obama was going to tell the kids to go kill their parents or something.  Well he changed his mind when he saw the lesson plan and now he's going to let his kids watch  ::)

I totally agree!  They think " I don't like Obama, so my kids shouldn't have to respect him". What a wonderful thing to teach young children. When we had a war mongering brain dead jesus freak in the White House we still had to hear him out. The kids heard plenty of scary things from him...since the point was to scare people. Maybe those parents are worried that hearing a rational, intelligent speech may override the racist, immoral teachings coming from home.  :bs:

I think it is a great idea.  Parents certainly have the right to decide what they want for their kids, but people objecting to this speech are being downright silly.  Some of these parents probably allow their kids to watch Lord knows what on cable TV, but they are up in arms over the presidents speech?  I just do not get it these days.  I am beginning to think that we have more and more people that are angry/upset over nonsense, afraid, uneducated, ill informed, etc.

I live a town where there was a lot of opions for a lack of a better word about the speech.  So they did finaly show it to the High School children but said that they would wait to show it to the Junior High Children until they got a complete reaction from the speech.  I have a teen age son that is vary into history.  And we had a discussion about the whole thing and we came to the conclussion that by this point we have raised him to have veiws on thing and it is time for him to make his own opion about what is being said.

And the other part of this is his speech is it any different from a speaker at graducation.

I think that is just more of the same BS from right wing conservates. Next thing we'll hear from them is " impeach obama ". Remember how they trashed one of the best presidents of our time, Bill Clinton? And after George W. Bush, you wonder why they hadn't espoused impeaching THAT idiot.

I see nothing wrong with broadcast media being used as a means informing students on current events. I remember a television being brought into the classroom during the initial moon landing, in 1969, I think.
