creative recipes start in the kitchen
« on: November 13, 2016, 06:50:39 am »
I saw a guest chef on the Rachael Ray Show.
He showed a number of things anyone can do with leftover Thanksgiving food.
It was a contest to see how creative he could be and how fast he could create recipes.
A few items he mentioned were potato pancakes with turkey and cranberry sauce added to the mix, sweet potato pancakes, shepherds pie, and turkey pot pie.
He even added the sweetness of apple pie to some of the food items.

I've mentioned before my go to recipe the day after Thanksgiving.  It's the pampered chefs turkey cranberry wreath.  Everyone in my family likes it and it's a cinch to make.  Have all the extra left overs makes it the sequel to our Thanksgiving spreak.

For turkey we like having extra for casseroles later on in the year, sandwiches and just to nibble on! One year, I took the left over gravy, and made a turkey stew with it, vegetables and turkey. Was good. Did not need any seasoning at all!!

Not very creative, but turkey sandwiches with stuffing and cranberry sauce are a must in our house!

I can't bear to waste any food, especially when there are so many hungry people in the world, so I insist on making leftovers work for me and my family. I will have turkey soup, turkey pot pie, I make so superb gravy and stock (from the left bones) which I subsequently freeze. I also tried making some bubble and squeak, as my Dad used to call it. That is, I use the left- over mash and mix it with the leftover brussel sprouts or cabbage, then fry them as patties in a little oil. They are so tasty and wonderfully comforting.

Usually we make turkey noodle soup (from the leg bones), turkey pot pie, and save some sliced turkey for sandwiches. Although the shepherd's pie sounds good (maybe even with turkey instead of beef in the traditional dish).

I believe in using every bit of the turkey in different recipes. I sometimes freeze part of it,  too use later, but there is nothing that goes to waste on it. Now my sist-in-law just throws the bones and everythibg away, Keeps what ever is carved off of it. I will sometimes  bring  what she doesn't want and cook it up and pick all of the meat of of the turkey and make a big pot of Turkey noodle soup and then freeze it in small  bowls and take a lot ofit out to dad's . He loves it.

People who can be creative in the kitchen really have my admiration because I don't know HOW they do it.  Leftover turkey becomes cold turkey sandwiches every year and that's as "creative" as I can get with that.   ;D
