It was some kind of browser lock they come in many forms.  Run your virus scan after you shut down and don't restore your previous session on that browser.  You may need to run scan again.  Sometimes when I get something like that I turn power off by surge protector and then run virus scan and also do a file cleanup, I have Norton.  Don't ever pay anyone if you get browser locked and they ask for money to restore it, THAT IS A SCAM! :o 8)

If I were you I would boot up the computer in safe mode and run a antivirus and antimalware software. Running a computer in safe mode would restrict any rogue virus/malware that could fool detection and also make sure core components run (while non core components don't). Norton is an alright antivirus but Bitdefender is better, from computer experts/independent testing (if you are paying for good antivirus). If you need a antimalware software, malwarebytes is the most well known and the complimentary security program. Make sure in custom scan you check "scan for rootkits" and also "warn users of PUP". That is potentially unwanted programs (pup). See what it finds and see if you need it, if not quarantine it. Make sure you don't put pup as malware because it might go after programs that you use

Usually a popup, scamware, or adware have a program name/prompt to try to fool the user. If it was a keylogger or something stealthy, it wouldn't have popped up on your screen. I'm guessing something is updating/downloading in ur system. Could be the browser, windows, java, flash, or a program you have (not sure tho)

A print screen picture would be helpful knowing what your dealing with (putting it in imgur or jpeg file). If it is a software related issue regarding your computer there is a bunch of computer help forums or techsupport reddit that can help you out for free. Just need to give them info/picture of what your seeing, so they can best help out. Just make sure when showing the problem you are have in ur screen (picture), you don't show private or personal stuff. You should only go to a repair shop if it is something hardware related

Sounds suspicious. Did you check your Norton history to see if it caught it

fjaz1 - a browser lock? I'm not familiar with that but perhaps you're right. If it was though, wouldn't that mean I couldn't close firefox? because I was able to.

liquidfire_43 - Thank you for your input! Funny thing about this is, I didn't click on anything and my computer isn't acting strange but having something odd like this appear gives me a bad feeling. It's an old computer so I'll probably take the easy way out and have it serviced.

nannycoe1 - You're right, checking the norton history is an idea but it didn't alert me to anything after the scan. Maybe it will the second time around.

Don't know much about computers, but it sound like it would be spyware or it could be a virus. I would checked that out.
