Does anyone like Dave Ramsey?
« on: August 15, 2016, 08:11:05 am »
I have been doing the Dave Ramsey envelope system, and all his budgeting for about 3 years. I can proudly say that I have paid off 80,000 dollars in 3 years. the process was super hard, and had to sacrifices a lot on going out spending money!!

I am almost debit free.  :)

I do watch his show. I am glad he is helping so many people.
I used to watch Suze Orman's show.
These types of shows are great to help people find balance in life.
I told my parents that I feel I could never pay them back for all they've done for me.
My mom said that there is no debt. 'It's our pleasure"
A parent does want to do everything they can to help their children [child].
When I was growing up, my parents found creative ways to keep us happy.
I never felt we were poor. People don't need luxuries to be happy.
They just thing they do. That may run into another topic.

I've heard his show a few times and while I agree with some of his tips for getting out of debt, I do think that he goes a little too overboard with trying to be debt free. For example, housing interest rates are very low right now. If someone has a mortgage at these low rates, I think it would be good to just pay the minimum amount on your mortgage and invest any excess into something that would earn more in interest than you incur on the mortgage; if you can earn 6% on an investment but pay only 4% in interest on some debt, it's better to invest to get that extra 2% than it is to pay off as much of the low-interest debt as possible. Basically, it is the difference between "good" debt and "bad" debt.

On the other hand, if you believe that we are heading towards an economic crisis in the future, then you may want to be debt free in order to avoid any ways that the government may take to shore up the economy, like negative interest rates (where you pay interest to store money in a bank instead of earning it as what's happening in other countries like Japan...

I have heard of Dave Ramsey and am vaguely familiar with his 3 envelope system.  A friend of mine and her husband tried it.  Another friend of mine did it shortly after she had finished college.  One did great with it...very disciplined.  The other... not so well. I don't spend much to begin with... when I do I nearly feel guilty bout' it.

Yes, I value his wisdom and knowledge about finances. I've gotten off-track with budgeting but now I'm back on, ready to change our financial future.

Dave Ramsey is a Christian financial planner who has a system to pay off debt and live debt free.  His program is often offered by churches.  Google him and you will find out a lot.  His program is tough to follow, but it DOES work.

As long as you keep in mind that his primary agenda is to SELL BOOKS

Most of the information I have heard on his show is just plain common sense.

Congratulations on almost being debt free!  :) It's hard work but it's great when you find a system that works for you. Thank you for sharing about Dave Ramsey.
