Smoking
« on: August 31, 2009, 08:54:27 pm »
It's a dirty nasty habit and lately, expensive. You would think with the increase, I would stop/quit, but NO. I tell myself if I quit, I would just gain weight...ok. Then, I'm under too much stress, well who isn't. Have I tried? Not really. I talk about it, but haven't done anything about it. Once, I did, really. Well maybe it was more of a test, to see how long I could go without one, let's just say it was a failed experiment. Soon, we smokers will be banned from public. Is there a scarlett S in our future?

Probably, unfortunately, but as a non-smoker I have to say I agree with banning smoking from all buildings, restaurants and bars.  I get very ill when I am around smoking to the point of severe coughing, runny nose and lose of voice for like a full week.  On several occasions I've had to miss school or work.  Its almost like an allergy, one that makes you physically ill not just congested.  I understand everyone's freedom but is it not my freedom to breathe clean air and not get sick off of deadly chemicals?  Personally, if you want to smoke, do so, but its your choice not mine to inhale death

Whats really bad about smoking? the nicotine or the tar from smoke because there are innovations that exclude the tar and give you only nicotine. you can smoke anywhere with it

But with second-hand smoke you get all of it and it's much worse

I was a 10 year 1/2 pack a day smoker.  It took me many, many times to quit.  I'm 2 1/2 years quit now, but I still think about it.  There was a lot I enjoyed about smoking.

Two words STOP IT!

Thing is you need to take control of it. You know you do it, you hate it so change it. You know what would happen so you know how to stop it. Just don't do it, or let yourself gain that weight. And the stuff you are stressed over? Drop it. If you cannot do anything to help what you stress over why stress over it? Now if there is something you can do, then and only then do you need to stress, and by stress I mean take action. Don't sit there doing nothing. That will get you no where, and is not good for you.

You are right about it being dirty and dangerous.  It is very hard to break a bad habit.  That is really all it is.  It is easy to say don't do it, but that is what you really need to do:  Don't do it!!!  Don't smoke!  There are tools out there to help.  If you really do not want to quit you won't quit.  Do the positives of smoking really outweigh the negatives?  The most important thing I can think of for quitting is to improve your health by not smoking.  I cannot understand why people would want to be so unhealthy and seriously put their health at risk by smoking??  I guess to each their own.

Not a smoker, but it definitely is a filthy and nasty habit.  Smoking is not good for your health or anything else or anyone else who is breathing.

The smell gets into everything-Hair, Clothes, house  etc. and it stinks.

Not a smoker, but I have been a Passive smoker sometimes as few of my frens do smoke. I hate the smell (more like a stinky smell). When I ask them to quit smoking, many say 'we die anyways so what if I die due to smoking'  :angry7: :BangHead: I just scold them for not having the sense in appreciating the gift of life. Of course I agree we die anyway (in the end maybe like after 60-70 or 80 years ;D) but why add reasons to get dead sooner ???
Fortunately, I was able to save few of them from going to their death by smoking, by helping them quit (one less reason to get DEAD sooner)...

Many smokers donno that it's as harmful for passive smokers as it to them, maybe making people more aware of this fact can help them in quitting.

Ahhh smoking... I remember it well. First off, you can't quit for anyone else, you have to be ready to do it for you. Secondly, if you are fortunate enough to be able to wear the patch with no ill effects, you will be more successful especially if you have smoked a lot or a long time or both. To all who smoke and want to quit, good for you and keep trying. To those who smoke and do not want to quit, it's your life. To those who have never smoked, I'm proud of you, but don't judge because you'll never understand.

I am in the same boat.  There are times where I think I want to quit and I do for a few hours or days.  Then it is right back to it.  I too think I will gain alot of weight.  I watched it happen to my mom.  Second hand smoke is bad, and I do agree that you should not smoke in buildings, schools, etc.  However, here is a question.  Why is it ok to drink alcohol in a bar, but not smoke in it.  Everyone in there is over 21 right?  Everyone is destroying their kidneys every Sat. night, right?  So why cant you smoke?  ...and half those people drive home drunk.  Not bitter just askin.  Hahahahah.

I have been thinking of quitting soon.  My Doctor told me that there are 617 poisons inside each cigarette and that by time you finish smoking a regular size cigarette, you have effected your body in 617 ways.  I have only been smoking for less than 15 years but I think it has taken a toll on me.  I might make it my new year's goal.
