Extra charge on paint
« on: July 07, 2016, 05:31:57 am »
I went to a home improvement store bought a gallon of paint and was charged almost 2 dollars for a recycle fee. I don't mind paying it but if I have old paint, can I bring it back there without charge?

Hmm, that I don't know. But if you already paid for it, then there shouldn't be a charge.

That's weird!  We just bought 2 gallons of paint a few months ago from Home Depot.  We paid only the price of the paint, I would have questioned that!

Stores are charged recycling fee's just like garbage fee's.  But to factor those fee's into the price of things on the consumer isn't right.  If they want to "go green" that's fine.  That's great actually.  But then they should eat up those costs.  Or give consumers the option.  That's kinda sneaky.

Wow - that seems like a lot of money for "recycling"!!  I would have checked some other stores before I purchased in that particular store.

If that is a fee for recycling then you should be able to bring back in the empty can just like they do with the $5.00 fee they charge on getting rid of your old tire.  I would question this with the store manager and find out for sure why you have to pay the $2.00 fee.

I don't know for sure, but it's worth a charge.  This isn't unique to paint though.  Countless industries disguise extra costs as 'fees'.  If you pay attention you are probably paying those type of fees for a variety of things.

I would ask what a recycle fee is.  I have never heard of that.  As for if you can return old paint to them and they will accept it...no on one here can tell you that.  You would have to go and ask at the home improvement store you are wanting to take the old paint to.

With all the new laws on hazard there are so many additional charges.  We had to get of a TV and took it to Best Buy for disposal and they charged $100 to get rid of it.  Even the recycle plant by us would not take it.

I have never been charged a recycling fee for paint!  I guess the container is the only thing that can be recycled.
Have a wonderful day!
