Do you have/use a smoker?
« on: June 02, 2016, 06:25:55 am »
My one friend has a smoker and loves it.  I was thinking of getting one, but it seem like a lot of work,  she uses different fuels and it takes hours to cook meals.  Any ideas on this?

i use mine a lot you load it with charcoal and flavored woods and fill water pan. place meats on grills. leave it for 4 to 8 hours and wonderful flavorful food comes out. so easy no standing over the stove all day

Smoking meats isn't "cooking" the meats. It's was meant as a preservation method but now it's a way to flavor foods. You still have to cook the food (usually pork ) in the conventional manner.

Our foster son bought a small one for me to use. I don't use it anymore but I used it for chicken, beef briskets and pork chops.

My husband built a large smoker years ago. During hunting season, there is a group of 5 huntersand we butcher and make deer sausage, jerky, snack sticks, besides the chops, steaks and roasts. On fishing trips, they also smoked some of the catch.

Some years, the harvest wasn't large enough to fill the smoker, so he built a smaller one. One year we had too much harvest for the large smoker, so to pick up the pace, he did summer sausage in the smaller one. Nice. Hubby also bought pork roasts on sale and fresh picnics, and he has smoked them. Turned out very good. Just like "store bought."

I don't use a smoker for cooking. I prefer a normal grill for flavor.

I do have one and only used it once. My father in law gave it to me because he bought a new one. I smoked some ribs in it but because I work 24/7 I wasn't able to keep an eye on it until the meat was over cooked when I got back from my work. But yes. It takes time to slow cook the meat but it is very rewarding when it is done right.
