Buying a used car
« on: May 25, 2016, 06:26:09 pm »
Today was a little stressful for me today. I went to a dealership to view a used car after I discussed the price with them in person and on the phone because I did not want to waste my time going up there. When I get there, I test drive the car and I like it only for them to try to charge me $1600 above what I told them I would pay for the car. After going back and fourth they took $1100 off, but I'm still unsure. I like the car though. It feels like its the one.

That's good you got them talked down on the price but its shady they upped it to begin with after you were told a price before hand. This is why you should always go to the dealership discuss price first face to face instead of on the phone because when someone gives a price on the phone most times it can be bs. Hopefully you fully had car checked out to know it's not going to be a lemon. But if you did and it works fine congrats

Just make sure it runs good and doesnt have problems. Used cars are a good way to go. Atleast no payments or small payments.

I think that this is precisely why dealerships are dying and a thing of the past. It was like you were in a bait and switch. I would not buy the car based on principle. I wouldn't be able to fully enjoy the car knowing that someone had lied about it and I ended up paying five hundred dollars more as a result. That is why craigslist is so popular. Typically you are not dealing with a professional sales person with overhead that must be covered by a higher price for the vehicle you are purchasing. My wife always buys new cars and uses a broker that charges a three hundred dollar flat fee. I bought a fifty year old jeep but not until after it had sat on the market for eight months. The seller wanted five thousand dollars. I loved the jeep and eventually got it for twenty two hundred dollars.

We are very careful about buying a used car. But i can not see going down and spending the money for a new car when as soon as you drive it off the parking lot  the value decreasing so darn much.  Besides they is nothing wrong in driving a used car. Shows you know how to save money.

Nope. Shady deal. It's not the only car in the world. Look somewhere else.

If you don't find another you like as well after a week or so, tell the dealership you'll pay the original price you offered for the one you wanted and no more. If they balk, you walk.

I'm fearful of businesses that aren't honest and upfront in their dealings.  I'd go somewhere else.  And tell this dealer exactly why.

That's really good, I'm buying a used car from Carmax for about $7,000.00+ which is a little newer 2012; it was a fleet car so, the car company rented it out rather then personally own. Which is why I want it, cuz it would have been taken care of better than one that was personal owned! You though, I think got a real great deal at the price you paid for a used car!

Negotiating for a new or used car is something most of us do once every 3 to 10 years and the dealer does it every day. Which one do you think has the advantage?

Don't spend more than the price you already discussed. Look elsewhere. That is not how they should conduct business, but often do. Stand your ground. They try to get you down there to get you to fall in love with the car so that then you want to buy it even if they jack the price up. Then they will try and tell you how it will only be $30 more on the payment or something... or to finance it for 72 months to keep the payment down so that you pay 3 times what the car was worth.

Stand your ground or go somewhere else! Be tough!

I don't trust dealers like that. I would flat out demand they honor the original deal, or they lose the sale - that's final.
I am going to need to get another car soon, and I'm not looking forward to it. Not only am I attached to the one I have, but I just don't like any of the newer vehicles out there. They are all overpriced, it's even hard to get a good deal on used ones that have high miles.

I'm glad they knocked the price down. That's why it helps to do research before choosing to buy a car. My husband and I needed a car last year because our other car was totaled. The last day we were to take the rental back, I was on a mission. We needed a car that day. Mind you, I had been looking at different used cars online at dealerships in our area. The place we went to had a good used car for a very good price and the mileage was good. All I wanted was a 4-door sedan. The guy tried to sell us a Jeep Commander. Are you kidding me? The note was also outrageous and it was a used Jeep. I was determined not to fold, thinking we may have to take our business elsewhere. All of a sudden the finance guy looks in the computer and tells us he found a car. The same car I saw on their website. The price was right too. We made the deal and got our car.
I'm saying all this to say stick to your guns and do your research.
