The first apartment I rented back in the 70's was $50 a month.  It was one bedroom and quite nice.
I guess those days are over.

I think it's location and demand.....nice posh area, desirable community - higher price, undesirable area, lower rent.  I have lived in both type of areas... paying $400 for a 3 bedroom to paying over $1000 for one bedroom.  Purchasing 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home for $40k to paying over $300k for 3 bedroom new construction.  Location, location, location. +++= Demand.

Rent prices is crazy these days.  So glad I own my own home.  I have a son who pays  $1200.00 a month for a 2 BR Apartment.  And I guess that is cheap.  It is just unreal to me  :(

There is no way I would 2800 dollars for a 2 bedroom apartment.  You can buy a 4 bedroom house and pay less per month.

I dont think renting is worth it. I actually owned 2 houses in my life and I am working on buying a 3rd . People dont realize that they can get a mortgage even with some bills and even bankruptcy. I have done it. Most of the time, Your mortgage payment is either the same or even lower than the average monthly rent payment. the only thing is, all repairs are on the home owner.

You have to be able to make the down payment.  If you are talking about a house.  Trailers are a different story but you have to have land to put up for it.  You are correct in that mortgage payments are the same or less that rent.  My mortgage is way less than most people pay for renting.

Depends on where he lives.  If he lives in New York then that is probably average or maybe even cheap.  If he lives in my home town that would be crazy insane.  I love owning my own home because I am the boss.  I do what I want to.  I have the pets I want and no one can tell me what I can or can't have or what to do.

Sometimes they have programs for first time home buyers with no down payment. low interest also should come into that deal. thats the way it was when I bought my first house
