My husband, son, and I live with my mom in a mobile home that constantly has something breaking, on a small piece of dirt in a cruddy community. We had to move here after my husband got laid off and I got sick. We are very thankful to have a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs, but I can tell you a lot would change if we became millionaires. Just so you have the point of view from which I'm writing this....
If I were to win the lottery (fat chance since I don't actually play the lottery) then I would definitely keep it a secret to avoid hurt feelings from people who may believe they deserve money just for knowing us. I would first tithe right off the top (lots of people in worse positions then myself), then pay off all of my old medical bills and lock a chunk of the money into the guaranteed education tuition program in my state for my sons college education (we have an established acct already, but I'd love to put more into it). I would then purchase my dream home ($375,000 4,000 square foot home on 2 acres not far from me.) This house we are currently in we would pay off and fix up so that we could rent it to a low income family that doesn't have the income to rent a home, but needs the space because they have a large family.
Our new home would have enough space for the three of us, plus my mom, and my aunt, we would also adopt a sibling group that is currently in foster care but needs a forever family. The acre that the house is not located on would be one giant pea patch divided up for families in my area that don't have space for a garden, or can't afford vegetables. We would purchase all the seeds needed, and till the ground. We would also purchase a bus and pick them up from a designated spot 4 days a week to come out and work the land. We would not ask for anything in return for ourselves, we would just ask that 10% of the veggies that they grow be donated to meals on wheels or the food bank for people who are not able to come grow food themselves. I don't even care if they decided to sell some of the food they grow because that too will be giving them a hand up.
Yup, that's been my dream for some time. Thanks for letting me share it with you.
We'd give some money to my half siblings, and my husband's mom and brother too, but that wasn't part of my overall dream of helping others, so I didn't include all of that.
