our 2001 ford has blown a head gasket whatever that is i'm thinking of getting a used one for 5-6000 . I don't know much but it seems like it will cost 1000 or more to fix. been a good car mostly . what would be a good used car, i don't drive that much no commute anything like that.

Many people have honda civics or Subaru... Honda civic is a general car that most people I know have... Subaru on the other hand, my father likes since it has better quality than most of the cars he have seen and also all wheel drive for snow

I hate having to buy a car.  I wasn't even driving for a year or more - was using a service for the handicapped but that got too restricted they didn't like driving down into my yard and hours were too restrictive so I bought a little car for 3k which has worked out real well but now needs a couple of repairs which I hope and pray won't be too excessive on my limited income.  Well best of luck to you find the right thing for you and your budget.

There really is no blanket answer, however, Toyotas, Hondas, and Nissans are typically good.

Once you see a car for sale that you think you may want to buy, you should look it up online at the various car forums (30 min appx) to make sure that year of that car has NOT had any serious issues with it.

Just get a used Honda or Toyota. They are extremely reliable and will hardly ever let you down.

I'd get the Ford fixed if I were you, primarily because you aren't going to be able to sell it to get cash for a new used car if you don't fix it. And if you do fix it, not only should you be able to sell it, you would be able to drive it some more too.

If it's only the "head gasket", it's probably cheaper to replace that than buy another car because a quality used car with low miles will be upwards of $10,000!!!

I have ridden in my car for some years because I took care of it.  I know I need a new one, but can't afford it.

Like some of the others have suggested, Honda and Toyota are often good and reliable brands when looking for used cars. Though you might also end up paying slightly more for them. What's really most important is making sure you have some awareness about the car's history. Has it been in accidents, what recent repairs has it had, how much mileage. And just what the lemon laws in your state are.

We just replaced the head gasket on our 2005 toyota tundra and it cost $3000. We wouldn't have done it but it has been such a great work truck for us, we have 250,000 miles on old blue already and want another 150,000. Go for a Toyota!!!

I have a 2005 Ford Focus.  It has been the best car I have ever owned.  I don't have any problems with the car, I would just like to have a newer Ford Escape.
