Goldilocks
« on: February 09, 2016, 06:40:52 am »
I know that I need to go on a diet and lose a few pounds off of my mid-section.  And I was ALREADY planning to do that before last night...

I sat down at the kitchen table and was on the phone with my mother, helping her through some computer problems.  I scooted the chair out just a bit to get some space and I heard what sounded like wood cracking.  I immediately looked down and saw nothing obvious, so I chalked it up to my imagination and that it was just the chair feet scraping across our kitchen floor.  I stood up and walked into the living room to plug my phone in, came back in and sat back down and the entire chair collapsed to the floor. I found myself staring up at the ceiling with my head on the floor!

Only injury was on my left second toe -- I must have kicked the table leg as I was falling down.  The chair is a complete loss.  It's too bad I can't post a photo of it on here, because the image of the broken chair on the floor really is STRAIGHT out of the Three Bears story!  As a matter of fact, this was actually my daughter's chair in the normal dinner seating arrangements - so you could say it was the Baby Bear chair!

These were neither old nor cheap chairs, so I have no idea what happened.  We just bought the table and chair set within the past 3 or 4 years and spent high three figures on the set.  Luckily, there are only three people in our household and four chairs to the set.  One chair always sat off in a corner for lack of room around the table which has one side up against the wall.  So we will still be able to function as we had...

For what it's worth, I am just a shade under six feet tall and the scale tips at 205-210 pounds.  I was already planning to get that down 20-30 notches, but I know that these chairs were designed to hold more than that!

Unfortunately, I was the only one home at the time, so nobody else was able to see it and laugh at my expense! LOL!! :o

It's a good thing no one was home...otherwise you'd be hearing about it for years! LOL

"Remember when Dad broke the chair? The look on his face! And he just laid there, looking at the ceiling!"

I'm glad you weren't hurt, other than your toe.

Oh my goodness! Glad you're okay. I have an Aunt who fell and got stuck in a laundry basket. I'm not kidding (it was shortly after hip surgery). She wasn't home alone so they had to call 911, take her to the emergency room IN THE BASKET and cut her out there. She still hears about that one, LOL!

Oh that is a great story! You story-tell so well! I also made an idiot of myself once whilst I was decorating the hallway. Our hallway is high - probably about 12 feet high and I took it upon myself to re-arrange the colors in accordance with my curtains! However, having no ownership of a pair of ladders, I had to make-do with a sturdy table, a chair, and a plastic light weight box, one on top of the other. (You can see where the story is going can't you?). My kids were young, 1 and 3, so I put them to bed for their afternoon nap, primarily really so they wouldn't get under my feed whilst I was painting. So I stacked my box on top of the chair, and the chair on top of the table and climbed up to the ceiling. A couple of minutes later in I heard a crack, I stopped breathing. You'd think I'd have the sense to descend back onto the ground floor, but no - I was on a mission! A minute later, I became distracted, enough to alter my balance slightly and the whole structure came tumbling down. I landed on my bottom and hurt myself so badly, I had to lay there for a few minutes until the nausea and breathlessness subsided. I was embarrassed at my stupid self for thinking I could re-write the rulebook on home decorating tips. I wondered how long I might be laying there - perhaps until my kids woke up? Perhaps until my husband came home from work? It crossed my mind that I could feature my own story in the commercial "I've  fallen and I can't get up!". We live and learn don't we?

I'm laughing, too - not AT you, but WITH you, simply because the same exact thing happened to me (and I'm all of 106 lbs.)!  It's not you, it's the chair.

I'd like to say thank you for saving me a fall.

This morning, I sat down at my kitchen table and heard a creak and a pop, and felt the chair shift.
I jumped up and examined the chair, and sure enough, the dowel that joins the front legs to the rear was hanging loose from one end.

I probably wouldn't have moved nearly as quickly if you hadn't told of your experience.

So thanks for sharing.   :)

They really don't make chairs like they used to...
