I had this problem once, many years ago. There is no polite way of going about it, but don't lie to preserve their feelings. There are also laws that prevent you from just kicking someone out on their duff. In many states you are required to give a roommate 30 days notice to vacate your home. You should check the laws in your state to see what they are. After you have those facts, type up a friendly letter telling the person that they need to find another place to live by (date.) It is your home and no explination should need to be given. Send the letter by registered letter, so they have to sign for it and cannot later deny receiving it. Also keep a copy for yor records. MAKE SURE YOU SIGN AND DATE THE LETTER BEFORE SENDING IT! Then if they are not out in the time frame alloted, you can go to the courthouse and serve a formal eviction notice on them. If they know what is good for them they will not want the sherrifs department escorting them off of the property with all ofthe neighbors watching.

This sounds like good advice to me. If you agreed to one month then you should really try to honor that unless he has somewhere to go sooner and wants to do that. Worst thing you can do is say nothing beforehand and then expect him to be out in the same day though.

I was wondering how your room mate problem came out. What ever happens or happened it should be a good learning experience. I don't think I could ever have one again. I thought about it but decided against it because I remembered what happened the other times. This is my house and I'm the boss and it just wouldn't work. :)

Tell him the truth - that you want him out.  If he is your friend then he should respect that.  It might make him angry at first, but he'll get over it.
