Being Unable to Clearly Think of Connections with Relatives

When I was very young, I had trouble thinking of the facts that my father was my mother's husband and cousins' uncle and not their father and that a cousin of mine was my grandmother's grandson and not her cousin. Did anything like that ever happen to you? When I remember that unawareness or just unclear thinking, I more often feel embarrassed than feel amused.

Just a couple of years ago, I met two of my cousins that insisted that we were all double cousins. 

They've tried explaining it to me a couple of times but it's hard for me to grasp. 

I made up a song about it to sing to them at our family reunion 'cause I think it's pretty crazy. I believe it, but it's still crazy.
