minimum wage increase
« on: December 30, 2015, 06:17:51 am »
so, if the minimum wage goes up, so will cost of living will increase. Then, people on fixed incomes (like me) will get a cut in spending power. I don't see how that is fair. There needs to be a way that we can employ people with better paying jobs?

Right now I am a freelancer, looking for a hourly job. I can understand both sides. However, I worked hard to get an associates in business administration. I also have ten more classes before I graduate with a bachelors, however I am not in school right now. People can look for better jobs, go to colleges, and other options. I know that the minimum wage isn't good for a lot of people. However, it can hurt a lot of people.

I think the minimum wage needs to go up but not that dristic jump alittle at a time to not throw the economy in backlash

my son worked at Mc Donalds and he knew a girl who worked there had 2 kids and because of her low wages was able to get food stamps. now if her she got better pay would not get the stamps. I always think that fast food jobs are starting jobs for kids who live at home like my son or maybe part time jobs for people who have kids . They should get an increase but 15.00 an hour seems high they will raise the price of food at fast food places.

When cost of living goes up and minimum wage goes up the disability income that people receive goes up with social security.  I should know when I was on SSI I got many raises but not every year. The raise would be a little over $20 more.

It is the same way in Canada my province's minimum wage is $10.60 an hour and if you are an inexperienced worker you will get paid less per hour. The job I left was a call center due to stress, depression and other things I think at the end with my raises I was making $11.55 which is considered good but it is not enough even with 2 incomes. The saddest part is that we don't travel hardly, rarely go out and live a very frugal life and still have a hard time getting by. I am to the point now where I may consider going to the food bank since I have donated to it numerous times in the past.

The minimum wage should go up, but raising it to $15/hr all at once is ridiculous. The prices of everything will skyrocket as companies have to raise them to cover costs of the new higher wages. Wal-Mart would no longer be all low prices if they up and decided, here's $15/hr. You gotta be realistic. Simple economics.

Keep in mind that while the magic number is $15/hr, it will not happen right away. It will gradually go up over a period of time. This is the proposal. I see both the pros and cons of the equation with this issue.

so, if the minimum wage goes up, so will cost of living will increase.

 ???
The cost of living has already been increasing steadily for the past thirty or forty years. It's the minimum wage that has failed to keep up.

Minimum wage has kept up. If it was adjusted for inflation, it would only be $4-5 today.

How has it kept up? It has stayed about the same (in most of the US) since the 1970s. Why would adjusting it for inflation make it even less?

Your first statement is blatantly false. Minimum wage was only $1.60 in 1970. It's more than quadrupled since then. Second, when minimum wage was signed into law in 1938, it was $0.25/hr. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $4.20 in 2016.

I agree that raising it to $15 an hour is almost ridiculous. Usually people need experience, education, or both to earn that.
