For me it was just something I grew out of. My parents never told me that there was no Santa. As I got older I started to notice things like packages that were from Santa were in my dad's handwriting.

i would tell you kids not to believe in him if it is in spite of your superior gods. if they do believe in the "claus" until they are like "way too old" for it then no worries there is a culture that supports it.

When kids are really young, they want everything at Christmas and as Mommy and Daddy are not paying for it, they fully expect to receive everything on their Christmas wish list. When they get a little older, it is good for them to have an appreciation of the value of things and to realize that it is not fair if Santa has to buy everything. When they get a little older still, they have a better understanding of things which are realistic, and so at age 7 or 8, I told my sons that Santa was not real. My son had already started asking questions such as, how does Santa get into the house if we don't have a chimney? So I felt it appropriate to respond that he was right to question logistics! My son knew he couldn't fly and therefore it was unreasonable to expect that a big fat man with parcels would be able to fly, unless he was on an aircraft. The other thing is that I didn't want my sons to appear silly at school. However after I told them Santa was not real, I also told them to keep it a secret because the other kids might not know yet.

Probably about 7 or 8 but some years ago I knew of a boy that was 12 that supposedly still believed and he was a normal boy.

My little girl is almost four I am going to let her believe in Santa as long as she wants, but I know people who have kid is just a few months older than my little girl who already told her that Santa doesn't exist because they want her to realize how hard they work to get her presents. I disagree I think kids should believe as long as possible. I am curious what other people think.

I agree with you.  Let the children BE children and have dreams that fill them with wonder and excitement!  As my kids got older and started asking questions, I explained it to them like this:  Yes, Mom and Dad get you SOME presents, but Santa brings the rest!  I ALWAYS made sure there were gifts specifically from "Santa" under our Christmas tree, and we always did the "cookies and milk" thing.  My son used to write letters to Santa and leave them with the cookies and milk, and I always made sure his letter was answered by "Santa."

My son will be 28 years old Christmas Eve and now will have a baby of his own coming next June - I STILL have those "Letters to Santa" AND their replies!  LOL!  There's going to be a LOT of "fun stuff" I'll be giving back to my son and his wife as "reminders" of the awesome times and things he did when he was just a tot!  I want him and his wife to feel the very same wonder and excitement for the things they have to look forward to with this new baby as my son and daughter brought for me and my husband!

Santa DOES exist, and he lives in every one of us - especially if you've got kids!

I NEVER believed in Santa. My parents worked too hard to let us think someone else bought us presents and we turned out just fine. Never even met another kid that believed in Santa Claus, to be honest...So, I'm assuming the youngest a kid can be fooled into believing he exist is age 3 to 5? After that.....well.

Why spoil the fun, let kids be kids as long as they can be.

I'm with you, I let my daughters believe in Santa until they were old enough that they didn't cry any more. Then all they did was a list for me to see what they wanted.

I think good and bad, the good is to keep their fantasy but sometime too much fantasy is not too good, I remember there is a news saying about a boy try to copy like superman to jump from his apartment and die from it. Of course, we are talking about Santa, and no child want copy like Santa to ride the reindeer in the sky and give out presents, I guess. Besides Santa can bring happy sprite.

Anybody can believe in Santa. But there is a certain point when you should realize Santa isn't real.
