I learned to drive a stick shift when I was 17 years old. My mom taught me in a large farmers field on a camping holiday in Wales, my dad was willing but never seemed able to give instruction calmly. What I found the most difficult in learning to drive, was finding the "biting" point between the clutch and the accelerator, I always lifted up too quickly and stalled the car, then I kangaroo hopped a few feet and so we started the process again. Eventually I got the hang of it. I discovered it was not so much pressing down on the accelerator as just relaxing your foot a little. I have now been driving for 30 years and can honestly say, the best practice, is to practice!

It took me 3 tries to pass my driver's test! The written part was easy but the driving part was hard because I was so nervous and also because I feel the person who took me for the test the first 2 times but unrealistic.  :P Don't give up! Persist and you will get it.

Both my parents taught me how to drive. It took me 2 times for the written and 3 times for the drivers. People tell me I am a good driver now, I guess it just took a little while for me to learn. :-\

It wasn't that hard to learn. It's just getting over the mental block of passing a silly test that doesn't really test you that well.

I am somewhat of a professional driver.I taught both of m children to drive a five speed stick shift in about two days but spent an entire year driving with them to make sure that they were paying attention and giving pointers.  The state required that they have ten hours of supervised night time driving and fifty hours of supervised day time driving. I made sure that each child had at least thirty hours of night time driving and one hundred and twenty hours of day time driving. I also had them try different vehicles of varying sizes, speed, and transmission types. I made sure that they drove in snow storms and blinding rain. I let them try to drive for several hours at a time-being very careful to monitor their weariness. They passed with flying colors and I think that they are exceptionally good drivers.

Have a good driving instructor.. The one I had before the driving test misread where I was taking the test (apparently my first driving instructor placed me to another city)... He made me practice the road where they had one tests site, but it was in another city.. So he drove me there and I failed it... Second was a lot easier since I know the roads and more lenient

I had a lot of trouble learning parallel parking.  Highway driving is hard as well.

When you grew up on a farm, driving is almost like something I was born with. Didn't have much time to learn just seeing my dad and older siblings drive was all I needed. It became natural to me. My written exam was a whole different story. Took me like 3 times before I passed. I am a slow learner when it comes to reading.

My dad taught me to drive when I was 14 and at that time I could get a license at 14 (a long time ago.)  I think it's a good idea for everyone to learn to drive a stick shift as you never know when you may have to drive one.

Passed with flying colors. Had issues with merging but now I have mastered it.
