Lunch at School Problems
« on: November 08, 2015, 05:48:22 pm »
Whenever you sat next to someone during lunch at school, did you ever feel jealous of what he or she had for lunch? Also, did the other person feel jealous of what you had for lunch? I remember in my elementary school days, my classmates frequently wanted what I had for lunch, and they didn't understand that my parents made my lunch for me and not for sharing with anyone. The classmates already had their own food, so they were being a bit greedy.

My mom always packed extra, so I could share.  She knew, even if I didn't, that there were kids in my class who didn't get enough to eat at home.

I guess I felt a little jealous at times... My mom was a stickler for healthy eating, so my lunches just had nutritious food in it. But some of my friends would get "junk food" (according to my mom) in their lunches -- fruit roll-ups, pudding, cookies, etc -- so I'd sometimes find myself wishing I had those instead. I'd try to trade stuff from my lunch, but usually I didn't have anything that my friends were willing to trade for so I ended up just having to eat whatever mom gave me.

I intensely disliked eating at all until I was out of public school. School lunches were always a nightmare for me.  :( I don't remember ever getting a packed lunch because my mother worked full-time from the time I was five years old. So obviously, jealousy was not a problem with regards to lunches.

The only exceptions to my non-eating policy were fried chicken, mashed potatoes, chocolate ice-cream, chocolate pudding, sno-cones and chocolate candy. Do you detect a pattern there, like maybe CHOCOLATE?  There is a happy ending to this story. Now I like eating a lot!  And I still like chocolate.

When my children were in school I had to buy their meal tickets every month. But there was times they did not like what was going to be served so would take a sack lunch, of course there was always an extra in it.  They each had a less fortunate friend from a family that lived down the road from us that they shared with. The children (not mine) might if the were lucky bring just plain bread to eat. So my kids shared a lot with them. Why not share. We had plenty and I did not mind packing extra. Sometimes even when taking a sack lunch they would also get their hot meal and give it to the other children. I was so lucky my boys were caring and they grew into young men caring for others.

When I was in 1st and 2nd grade the kind of hot lunches they provided for us were Taco Bell, Arby's, and Pizza Hut. Looking back I can't believe they even provided those since school lunches have changed so much. Once I got older I brought sack lunches like sandwiches, soup, etc... In high school we got Subway and Little Caesar's.

In elementary school we ate the school lunches, so not much to get jealous about the same food as everybody else!

We all ate hot lunch when I was in elementary, so there wasn't ever an issue with what the person next to me had.

I sometimes felt jealous of what others had (but I think we have felt that way). I tried to ask my parents for snacks that "everybody" were eating.
