Calling people stupid

i think its terrible to call people stupid.

Every time I hear someone say someone is stupid, or their idea is stupid, I think of my dad.

One of his pet peeves was using the word stupid.

He'd say, "Were you born knowing what you know?  Nobody is stupid.  Ignorant, yes. Stupid, no."

It's one thing to be ignorant or unaware of something.  For example, I'm not much of a mechanic so I do not know how to change a timing belt, rebuild a transmission or replace a carburetor.  That makes me unaware and, dare I say, ignorant of these such things. 

I'm fine with that because I'm very good at a whole lot of other things that I enjoy. 

HOWEVER, I have to disagree with you; there are many, many people who really are stupid. 

How many times have we seen reports of the dangers of drinking and driving?  Yet how many people still do that?  They are stupid people.

This is just one of about a gazillion examples but the pattern is basically the same: stupid people either don't care about the outcome of their stupid actions or they think that their outcome will somehow be different even though it has been proven time and time again that the outcomes eventually lead to the same thing.

Bottom line - some people are indeed stupid.

That is a very nice way of looking at it. I also taught my kids that there are a few other words that they should try and avoid like fat, ugly, and useless. If you can not say anything nice you should refrain from saying anything at all. I have been on a project for twenty one months and directors/VP's have asked my opinion about other workers.  I always have something positive to say which irks them somewhat. I anticipate their meetings, who it is that they are trying to single out, and try to come up with the worst positive thing a person does. Like "this manager cares too much about their employees" or "this employee puts in too many hours".  If someone is truly bad at what they do it should be easy for management to spot this out and take care of it without involving the opinions of others.

It has gotten incorporated into the English Language like so many other words being used that have nothing to do with what they actually mean.

Whenever I do something wrong I call myself "stupid" as that seems to me to be what I am.  I very seldom call other people stupid excepting some of our leaders.

Whenever I do something wrong, I say "you dummy. How can you be so stupid?"  I do NOT call other people names unless they truly are ignorant. I see name calling all the time where people comment on political sites/news articles/etc.  It's a shame because those people who call others names are, in fact, the ignorant, stupid, fools.

I've seen some terrible curse words in those posts, too, and that really makes me furious. Those are the comments I hide or report to the website because they break the terms of service....except for Facebook. Those support people never find anything wrong with comments even though they may call a woman a ____________  (fill in the blank with a nasty word). It's not worth the time to report them.

Yea, I don't like it either.  The kids/teens say it all the time and I just think it sounds bad and disrespectful!
I also don't like it when they say shut up. Sounds awful to me!! Don't put people down, build a person up!

 its not nice to bully people every time i see prevent bullying videos I cry because that was once me as a kid and no one helped no one was their for me but then i realize that i did had help and i used it and became strong. yaeeee me

I totally agree with you and your dad about people being born knowing nothing, and as they learn they become intelligent. If they don't know something, they are not stupid, they are just being ignorant. That being said, when someone chooses to drive on the pavement just to get round a car who is taking their sweet time, now that's stupid!

I agree that it is a stupid thing to DO, but it doesn't mean they are stupid, just that they are careless enough to do something stupid.

I don't believe in slapping negative labels on people.  Sometimes people make mistakes or do stupid things; however, I believe that everyone is intelligent in their own way.
