Do you know the USA Constitution?
« on: September 17, 2015, 08:58:13 am »
Today is Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day). My two kids learned the Constitution in grade school. In order to meet the requirements, I made me a study tutor for them: we made flash cards, I had do organize memorization daily time frame, always asked questions on oral quizzes, sat down with them and encouraged, asked them how/did they studied; instead of letting them study doing their homework on their own normally.  They had the abilities to do this, it was hard on them and more on me lol.  The school had "Constitution Trivia Contests" after the nail-bite written test. WoW my daughter won the best score, won a nice plaque for the wall and a stuffed large teddy bear and the stand-up in front of everyone. My son passed and very happy about that. Yes we are citizens.

I don't know all of it. It is too much to memorize. My memory is not at 100 percent.

I wish I had the time to learn more about the constitution but that would take me away from fusion cash.

That's awesome! I used to know the majority of it but I think I have forgotten most of it because I haven't used it since school.

Use to kids learned about this stuff in school.  These days they do not.  And fact is our own government doesn't seem to know what is in our constitution.  Smh.

Our family was in the middle of a move to a different state when I was in junior high / high school, and because of the different curricula between the two states, I ended up having 2 full years of American history (and unfortunately, no true world history). Hence I have a very good understanding of the Constitution, not only in terms of what the text says, but also the background behind the different sections (esp. the different amendments). It's sad, though, how little Americans know about it.

I seem to know quite a bit more about the Constitution than our President does since he goes against it every chance he gets.

My kids did not have to learn the Constitution...probably because a large percentage of it no longer exists. I think that the bulk of it has been twisted to meet the needs of politicians.  Not everyone has the right to bear arms, illegal search and seizures are legitimized through subjective homeland security measures, the right to vote for every citizen can be impuned if you do not have the proper identification or do not understand directions as to where to vote...I think that one would be hard pressed to find a portion of the constitution that still stands.  Most politicians would tell you that the document has become obsolete as our nation has changed. My children also have a different view of civil rights as they have not seen what rights used to be like.

I definitely couldn't recite it, but I had to learn about it in my government class in college.

Sometimes the rights of individuals have to be subject to the rights of the many.  One person cannot override many in society.  Also, what was right at a time several hundred years ago may not fit today's society and situations.  For example, Homeland Security can search me and my things all they want in order for me and fellow passengers to feel safe.
