I have tried claritan or bendryl. Sometimes I will try cough medicine.

What works for you?

I didn't have much success with claritin but Zyrtec has been great for me.  The fact that it last 24 hrs and I don't get the dry mouth effect as I did with benadryl and chlor-trimetron  (both are effective just so short acting and makes me sleepy).

Today is Take a Loved One to The Doctor Day! I did say thanks for taking me to the my county general clinical office I take Loratadine 10 mg 1 tablet in the morning, Flurticasone Propionate nasal spray, Tylenol too, I do take other over the counter medicines at bedtime, sometimes. I dust and vacuum the rug a lot, thinking about putting in the hard wood floor instead of the wall to wall rug.  :-X

My youngest son (9) has been on Zyrtec for the last 3 years (6 months during the summer and fall). His allergy symptoms have been almost non existent since he started taking Zyrtec which is particularly good because for him, his allergies also induce asthma symptoms if it is not well controlled. My husband has just started taking Claritin for his allergies.

I have tried every single over the counter allergy medicine they make including prescription "designer" medicine made especially for me and my allergy and NONE of them last forever.  I find that switching around from time to time works best.

The only thing that truly works for me is Sudafed (or even the store brand Sudafed, which contains the same ingredients).  I've tried all kinds of stuff and for the most part, they're expensive and don't do a darn thing.

I've tried various kinds of anti-allergy OTC meds, and the one that consistently works best for me has been Loratadine (Claritin), although I've also had success with Cetirizine (Zyrtec) but because it costs more than Loratadine, I tend to just stick with that. I've also never had a problem using a generic brand, so again to save on costs, I go with those more often than the brand name (hence why I listed their generic name as well as brand name).

OMg what don't i take? Zyrtec (generic), singulair, several nasal sprays... benadryl as needed and eye drops for allergic conjunctivitis. I don't know what my life would be without all of them, but i feel like they arent doing much.

What a timely question!  Today was the first time in a few years that I have had allergies!  My head was stuffy, had a scratchy throat, nose was running and eyes were itchy. I went to lunch and poured a few drops of some lethal hot sauce on my curried chicken. It was so hot that I started sweating, my eyes started watering and my face became flushed.  It was just what the doctor ordered!  My allergies disappeared immediately! I may swear off of Claritin, Benadryl and Pseudophed! Just a few habaneros, ten or fifteen minutes of discomfort, and I am a new man with out having to pay a single red cent to the pharmaceutical companies.  I don't think that will work for everyone-at least I hope it doesn't...otherwise I will see the price of my beloved hot sauce go through the roof!

The best thing that has worked for me has been cold medicene. It has acetaminophen, an antihistamine, and a cough suppressant. I don't take it every day though, just once or twice a week. Most of the time I just stick with my neti pot.
