Now in days, yes. It's almost like every job field wants you to have at least some form of secondary education. But it's sad cause you go to college to get a degree to get a good job, but then you're stuck in student loan debt forever cause the rates are so high and the jobs just don't pay enough.

Yes, I do think it is important, but some kids are just not college material so it is up to each person.

In terms of college versus trade (because that seemed to be your thought) it depends on what field you want to go into. If you want to work with your hands or go into a service field, experience or trade school is probably better. If you want to go into science, politics, or a field where you're working with a single client and not using your hands, they tend to care more about degrees as well as work.

Basically, you can never truly win :/

I think it is somewhat important these days. And to the kids that go, they party hearty. LOL.

If the field you're interested in requires it sure without a question. College does NOT necessarily mean a high paying career though.  Maybe back in the day but that is not the climate for today's kids and won't be in the future. The only real way to guarantee it is to go into health care but that's not for everyone.

Many graduates are underemployed or unemployed. So, I strongly believe that if your an entrepreneur, a creative type, or skilled laborer forget about college. There is so much access to free information online. You can still be just as educated, sometimes more so without a degree.

Do you think college is important?

Depends on who you ask and what job you want.  If you want to be a doctor then yes a degree is important.  Our area HR was recently in and I was caught in the break room when she was talking to people.  She told a guy that his college education meant nothing.  He needed experience.  Honestly when it comes to a job it is all about who you know not what you know.

Only if you need it.....we are in a world where skill/trade jobs are what you will need. Why go to school for 4-5 years and have $130,000 of debt only to find out you can't get that job you thought you would and have a mortgage payment for the next 30 years. My sister in law makes more money (who didn't go to college) than her husband (who did) and is STILL paying off his school loan!!!

College may not the be the best place for everyone , but I do believe all young men and women need to learn a trade either at college or a vocational school. Some times a person who has learned a trade will start out at a much better paying job then some one who has sit in college for 4 years and never learned how to really work.  Flipping burgers is mostly for teens wanting to earn some spending money not a way of life for a person with children the pay is not good.  So  learn a trade. We have a great tec. school here where the kids get out of school and have great careers.  so far this year we have young men and women from 5 different countries on scholarships learning about the wind generators. Every one that  goes through the courses has a job waiting for them at great pay. Just saying is all.

It's best to be educated about it before hand. College can be a great choice, or it can be a horrible choice. Too many people go to college and never end up using their degree.

It totally depends on where your abilities and your interests lie.  If you're good at mechanical things college may be a total waste of time and money.  If you want to be a doctor or a teacher then college is the way to go.

Good point indeed...it depends!

No... but an education is important. All too often you see people going to college because they think they have to in order to get a good job. But then they waste their time because the college education isn't necessarily in the field where they want to work; for some they'd be better off getting their education from a trade or technical school instead of a college. And companies are beginning to realize too that a college diploma doesn't mean that the person learned anything relevant while at college; they'd rather hire someone that has the education and / or experience in the field they want to work in rather than someone with a college degree but no real understanding of the job that they are applying for.

If you actually look at many of the leaders in industry, several never graduated from college (in fact some never even went), yet no one can doubt their intelligence (esp. in their specialized field) or their business acumen. Here are a few well known people that never graduated from college: Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Steve Jobs (Apple), Bill Gates (Microsoft), Albert Einstein (although received a PhD, never actually received an undergraduate degree. Moreover, the PhD was obtained at a vocational school, not a liberal arts college), Thomas Edison (Inventor), Ben Franklin (Inventor), Carly Fiorina (HP), F. Scott Fitzgerald (Author), Henry Ford (Ford), John Major (PM of Britain), David Murdock (Real Estate mogul), Jim Skinner (CEO of McDonalds for several years), Steven Spielberg (Director / Producer), etc. And I didn't even mention the plethora of musicians, athletes, artists, writers, etc. that also never graduated with a college degree.

Carly Fiorina did graduate from college

College isn't for everyone, I'm going back to school and my boyfriend who only has a High School Diploma will still most likely make more than me even after I get my degree.
