How severe of a problem is mad cow disease and its human equivalent CJD nowadays? Those illnesses are the reason I think Europe is the most dangerous continent in the world.

Not sure how prominent of Mad Cow disease or vCJD is in the US or Europe... Steps to limit prion (protein that affects the bovine's nervous system is similar to a infection) in bovines are to monitor animal feed and only serving healthy cows to the people. I remember doing a GMO research project that Europe dislike GMO because of the BSE. Although no scientific evidence that links GMO animal feed to BSE, a lot of people (60% in 2012?) wanted GMO's to be banned from supermarkets.
