a neighbor said she was broke.
You may hear people say that from time to time.
It doesn't mean they are penniless when they say it.
it means that they are having trouble paying their bills.
they still have some money.

I think of broke as not having the capacity with which to do something. For instance: a broken vase is not able to hold water for flowers, thus, it is broke. Your neighbor is unable to pay her bills, thus she is broke. I have seen people at my work that are no longer able to do their jobs which could mean that they are broken.  These are all things that can be fixed with a little more attention. Glue can mend a broken vase. Your neighbor can look at reducing her spending and/or looking for a better paying job/second job (or start doing some tasks at fusion cash). People that are having difficulties at their current jobs can generally seek additional training or look for another job.

My mom would always say she was broke.
It didn't mean she didn't have any money.
It meant she didn't have money that wasn't already allotted to pay a bill.

I agree, i use the same phrase.  I have a hard to time paying the monthly bills at times but still get paid

I always understood that when a person is broke....

it means they are unable to spend until their next payday.

I create positive affirmations so I always have money...even though...I might be careful about spending.  It's important that we all manage our resources and make financially intelligent decisions.

There are actually so people that in fact have no money when they say I'm broke. I'm certainly broke when I only have some change in my wallet and a negative balance on my bank account. Even the people that have money may be in so much debt that they might as well have none

it happens from time to time. i sometime have trouble with money from time to time do to bills i guess you can say sometimes i'm broke

I say that all the time and sometimes am literally broke, I may have a couple cents to my name, but sometimes I have to scrounge for change.

If a person is having trouble paying their bills, then it's doubtful they have any kind of savings...which means they are indeed, broke.

Some people put paying their bills first and will say they "are broke" when it comes to doing other things.  It doesn't mean they are "penniless",  it means they need their money to pay their bills.
