Do you make home made spaghetti?
« on: July 16, 2015, 09:15:54 am »
What do you put in your spaghetti? I do not make home made spaghetti. I will make it one day, for now I use the different varieties of spaghetti sauce and heat some garlic toast.

With chronic pain sometimes I just have to keep things simple.

I make my own sauce, but not the actual pasta... In fact, I just made a batch last night! I usually start by browning some ground meat (usually beef, although I've also used turkey and elk before, both with equal success). I'll add in a bunch of spices (usually thyme, fennel, and oregano), garlic, and onions while the meat is browning (and some water to help the meat cook in small pieces). When the meat is almost browned, I like to add a 1/4 cup of a red wine (usually Cabernet) and simmer briefly to let the alcohol cook off. Then I add in the rest of the sauce ingredients: usually 1 28-oz. can of crushed tomatoes, 1 28-oz. can of diced tomatoes, a diced green bell pepper, and a small can of mushrooms (or diced fresh mushrooms).

I too have chronic pain and mobility issues as well so I sure understand.  I unload and load the dishwasher and my older son was supposed to do the most of the cooking but now he is sick of cooking so some of it is falling back on me.  I am going to make some stuffed shells in the crockpot.  Well best of luck to you with your cooking endeavors

Try using the Italian Sausage ground meat, it makes a world of difference.  Even the Turkey version is wonderful.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I sometimes do this too. I guess if you do use Italian sausage, try to determine what spices they use and complement those spices in the rest of the sauce. For example, sweet Italian sausage tends to have for fennel while a spicy sausage will have more oregano.

Once in a while I will make home made spaghetti sauce, but sometimes I am really lazy and just use canned sauce. Hubby doesn't care as long as he has some spaghetti to eat. He Is limited on how much pasta he can have, so it is a treat for him. Of course having garlic bread along with it doesn't help. But he will eat a big green salad with it.

I make a lovely spaghetti dish which my brother in law taught me. First I blitz up carrots, celery, onion and garlic in my food processor until it looks like paste. I cook this down till it is a light brown color adding a fair amount of salt and a little pepper. Once it is browned, I add the ground beef and once this is browned, I add a small can of tomato puree. I add a cup of water, a small bunch of thyme and a couple of bay leaves. I let this simmer for 2 or 3 hours, adding a little more water if it gets too dry and about half an hour before it is finished, I add a little white wine. It tastes delicious! Usually I make a huge batch and freeze what I don't use. The longer you let this simmer, the better it tastes.

sometimes.  I will make homemade spaghetti sauce when our tomatoes and onions and spices in the garden get big enough.  we usually do about 10  to 15 jars of sauce.     Can't wait because I'm tired of buying it at the store  LOL

I use Prego; partly because, it's gluten free and it's convenient.  Then I pour it on gluten free pasta, ground beef and cheddar cheese.

Have a great day!

We use Regu (or Pregro) pasta sauce but we spice it up a bit by adding sugar (Yes, we put sugar in our pasta sauce!) garlic and chilli powder. It tastes delizioso. <kisses fingers>

I brown ground beef or turkey, add onions, green pepper, garlic, sometimes anchoives.  Then to be honest, I open a jar of Ragu or Pergo.

Yes.  I haven't made it in a while.  I use tomato sauce and paste, ground beef, green and red peppers, onions, turkey sausage, mushrooms, spices( garlic, oregano, some bay leaves).
