I too have caller ID and if my phone does not recognize the number, I simply don't pick it up. My mom, on the other hand (in her 70's), feels it is respectful to pick up the phone even if she doesn't know who is calling. I tell her she can do as she choses in her own private home! She is the same with answering the door - she feels obligated to answer the door even though she has looked through the spy hole and doesn't know who is about to greet her. Goodness, if you can't do what you want in your own home, when can you do what you want?

I'm on the DNC list, but I also set my phone to block calls without numbers and what I call "pest callers".  I don't answer numbers I don't recognize and if they become a problem I block them.

I was at work yesterday and I had a person come thru and we were talking and she said she use to be a telemarketer.  She actually told me if somebody was rude to her she would recycle their number so they would be called again.  She just thought it was funny.

The problem I have with telemarketers is when I tell them I am not interested in what they are selling, they keep right on trying to sell it.  I eventually hang up on them.  Most of the time I don't even answer the phone if I don't recognize the number.

I also screen my calls.  If I don't recognize the number, I don't pick up!  Why does it always seem to be right at dinner time when they call the most?

Luckily I don't have a house phone, so I don't get calls to me, but at work we get lots of calls from solicitors for ADT and other organizations wanting money. I just tell the telemarketers that they've called a business and that usually stops them from calling back.

If I do not recognize the phone number I will not answer the call.  I will check out the phone number, at my convenience, to see who called and it is usually some telemarketing company.  They really have no respect for the do not call lists. I also get perturbed about door to door sales people.  Our neighborhood is a 'solicitors not allowed' neighborhood but people continue to try and sell junk at the door.  These door to door beggars try to get through under the guise of having a religious, political, or charity exception to the rule.  I think it gives criminals the perfect cover when casing a neighborhood, monitoring times when people are away from home, and then taking what they want which is why we have a no soliciting rule. Both means of sales are undesirable. Seriously...If I need something I will go on line for it.

I no longer answer my phone unless I recognize the number, if its someone that knows me they will leave a message, and if they dont, it wasnt that important I guess

lol.  This sounds like my Mammaw.  I have told her it is not rude to just hang up.  You do not owe them an explanation for WHY you are not purchasing something from them.

The problem I have with telemarketers is when I tell them I am not interested in what they are selling, they keep right on trying to sell it.  I eventually hang up on them.  Most of the time I don't even answer the phone if I don't recognize the number.

Years ago one called me trying to sell me magazines and she told me I had ALREADY WON a his and hers diamond watch band set worth $10,000, a new that year mustang, and several other items.  All I have to do is buy 3 magazines.  When I told her I was not interested and before I could hang up I heard her call me a "cheap b*tch"  I was so mad.  But since at that time all telemarketing calls came thru as unknown there was NO way to report her.  My deal with that is if you want to make money then get a real job.  Not a job where you call people on the phone and harass them begging them to buy something from you.  And lying to get them to buy it.

I also screen my calls.  If I don't recognize the number, I don't pick up!  Why does it always seem to be right at dinner time when they call the most?

They call in the evenings because the thinking is most people are working during the day and will not be home to answer the phone.

I can only remember one time when anyone came to my door selling anything.  It was a indian woman selling magazines working her way thru college.  Yeah I told her to get off my property and basically off the hill I live on.  I did not know charities were allowed to go door to door.  We have in the past had a few religious usually jehovah witness come to the door.  I have 2 of those try to force entry into my home.  I had to get really hateful with them to get them to leave.  And threaten violence if they did not stop trying to get in my house.  And yes they actually were jerking on the screen door trying to get in.  When I went out on the back porch the tried to get around me to come inside my home.  That is a definite NO.

It is not rude.  That's what I try to tell Mammaw.  You don't know me or my situation.  Don't call me and try to sell me crap I obviously do not need and then get mad because I don't buy it.   And it's getting pretty bad when you go to places like your local bank or shopping.  It's all about sales.  I know for a fact that there are places where employees get in trouble if they don't sell enough extended warranties on products,  get people to open new accounts, get phone numbers when they make a sale.  It is unreal.
