Two years ago I needed a new washer/dryer.  I hadn't bought a new pair in about 9-10 years.  When I went shopping I could not believe what some laundry duos cost.  There are some out there close to $3,000!  Really?? 

Now I have to buy a new refrigerator and stove.  The ones I have are Whirlpool and they have been without problem since 1988!  However, I can tell it's time to replace them.  Now I see there are refrigerator upward of $3,000 and stoves that  average $700-900 dollars easily.  I guess if I can get 20 years out of them I have to look at it this way.  It looks like I will be paying about $1400-1500 for the refrigerator I want and $650-700 for the stove.  Fusion, how about some good paying surveys I can qualify for over the next 3 months?  LOL!!!

I just hope my washer, dryer and refrigerator hang in there but they are all second-hand.  I surely cannot afford the prices that are being charged for appliances now.  I'll probably have to go second-hand again if/when they quit.

Id'look at walmart or kmart,sears 3000.00 for a refrigerator seems very high. I would think 800.00 for just a regular frig could be gotten. We bought a dishwasher from sears a few months ago for 300.00 and its fine.Don't know if you live in Ca but airport home appliance has good deals.

I hear what you are saying and it's very sad that we now pay almost triple what we used to pay for appliances.  I think the saddest part is they're not even MADE  IN AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!

You can also get appliances MUCH cheaper.  You can get a Hotpoint which is made by GE for around $400.  No, it's not top of the line with all the extras but it will get your clothes clean.  You can also get a refrigerator for less than $500 and a stove for around $350.  When my refrigerator quit in 2011 and I had to go buy a new one I got a Frigidaire for $478.  No, it is not extra frilly but it keeps my food cold and frozen.  It serves the purpose.

I really do hope you get 10 or 20 years out of a new appliance.  It seems to me that they're more concerned with saving electricity or water, yet the quality of these appliances aren't what they used to be!  I remember last time I bought a new washing machine.  Got it home, set it up, and the first thing they tell you to do is do a wash in an empty tub as your first wash.  Me, following the directions, does this.  While I'm busy doing other things around the house and the machine is going, I begin to smell "smoke."  OMG, I almost died when I run to my laundry room to find my BRAND SPANKIN' NEW machine smokin' like a chimney!  Needless to say, THAT one went back and I chose a different one.  Got THAT one home, hooked it up and it worked... for about 3 months.  Within the FIRST year, they replaced the motor THREE TIMES.  Both of these machines were Maytags.  Remember those commercials where the Maytag man was "always bored?"  Yeah, believe that and I've got a bridge to sell ya!  Needless to say, I complained so loud and clear that Maytag gave me my money back.

Nothing is made with the quality it use to be.  And the companies are being forced to make their products to be more energy efficient.  People complain all the time to the sales people about washing machines and the fact that they don't use as much water.  Newsflash :  the sales person didn't manufacture the machine.  They want you to replace it in a few years.  But that just adds junk to landfills.  And we don't have the room to keep piling junk up.

I worked at a major Mall store for 17 years,,,,  that sold clothing, hardware, and appliances.  Appliances can be  outrageous in prices.  It all depends on what you as a person want in that appliance.
if you just need a Fridge to  keep things cold and don't fill it up with leftovers and junk  lol and fill the freezer you can get a good one for a good price.
If your one of them people that have to have all the fancy things on your new appliance then you gonna pay for it.  even the color of it will add to the price.

my preference is Kenmore,,,,,  I have had mine (fridge, stove, washer & dryer) for over 20 years and they are still going.

you get what you pay for.  I would pay a little more and get what I need,,,,  knowing it will last longer then buying something really cheap and spending more  trying to get it fixed.

The recession affected a lot of people to include business owners.  If they are charged more to purchase an item, then it all flows down to the consumer.  They have upped the cost by about 300%.

The more advanced these appliances are, the more expensive they get. Some of them are very complicated to use.

I sympathize - lol my washer and dryer are sooooooooo old its not funny but they still work so I guess I will keep them until they don't any longer - however we are looking for a new television - ouch - they are expensive - we have a big den and want to replace our relatively small tv with a much bigger one and have no idea what to get.  Not to mention our couch is falling apart and furniture isn't that cheap either.

I sumpathize, my washer lasted 16 years and it broke down, I have Appliance Insurance they came an fix 6 times, last time it was too much stuff to be done so I told them that I wanted to replace with a new one, of course they did not $$ the full price but gave me $300 for the old one which is what it was the cost to repair it LOL and I went and got a brand new LG for $550 and just paid the difference.  But my refrigerator and stove are about to die soon and I am thinking on the $$ it is going to come out of my pocket for those
