minimum wage
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:49:23 am »
I overheard a discussion about minimum wage.
There may be companies that do not pay minimum wage and try to get away with it.
I think it is a standard figure for those employers who do pay it.
I always thought it was standard across the board.
Wait staff get minimum wage, don't they or do restaurants purposely pay them less because of the tips they get?

There is a min wage for wait staff.  It is I think $2.15 an hour.  And yes it is because they get tips.
Every where else pays at least min wage.   And if they get tips most likely they make well above min wage.  That would only be $5.10 an hour in tips.    And if you do not make at least min wage when you figure in your tips the restaurant has to pay you the difference.

The get government assistance.  And a lot of times they are not married so the woman gets even more assistance.  I know of situations where the couple divorced and still lived the same with the sole purpose to her getting welfare.

I believe that one can live on minimum wage.  Section eight/subsidized housing in our state can cost an individual as low as twenty five dollars per month. I can live on less than fifty dollars a month for groceries and many people qualify for food cost assistance programs which can reduce your cost to nothing. I have purchased one pair of jeans, on pair of shorts, one pair of boots, one pair of sneakers and two work shirts-in the last two years-at a total cost of one hundred and eighty dollars which works out to less than a quarter a day or seven dollars and forty cents a month.  This would have been less if I had gone to a Goodwill/Salvation Army. I need a new computer every three years and they generally cost about four hundred and eighty dollars which comes out to thirteen dollars and fifteen cents a month, round it up to one hundred dollars and expenses can be paid making only two dollars and fifteen cents an hour.

Minimum wage in this country is a crying shame. Who can actually live on that? I know here in New York City they were going to raise it but it was shot down. And to live here is very expensive.

Interesting math there, and it might be true for your case, but when you have children it is very difficult.  Even when you restrict them, the school ask for money for certain things, and where I live if my kids want to do sports  for school it is $100 per child per sport, and again too much $$ for reduce costs; they have to eat and need school supplies, clothes, etc.  I have a family of 5 with both parents working and earning more than minimum wage and we barely survive the month.  We do not qualify for any of the low income/welfare things, even when my husband was working by himself they said that he made to much $$ for us to qualify, so pay rent either in an apartment or you own house and rent is over $1000 for a family of 5, food for 5 people (Breakfast, Lunch and dinner) even you cook everyday and do not buy outside food, but I cannot take public transportation to my job, because to do that I will need at least 3 hours on bus/subway each way and it cost $20 a day on transportation, so I need a car, gas $ which is still cheaper and a lot faster for me than to take public means and car maintenance (we already paid off the cars).

And like I said even making lots more than minimum wage we can barely scrap month to month $$ for living expenses, not even talking about entertainment/shopping $$ which is not there often, we save as much as we can so we can take the kids shopping once in a while.  I really cannot see a family surviving on minimum wage ti is absolutely ridiculous.

lol.  Here is the thing - it's not that easy to get into the housing projects.  Call it what it is.  And why would you want to live there.  There are people who have their own home and have lost their jobs.  It's insane to say they should sell their house and move into the housing projects.  And most people who live in the housing projects do not get the $25 a month rent.  If you are a single girl with a gang of kids then you get all the above mentioned stuff.

I believe it should go up some but not as high as I have been seeing people ask for.
