Good for you, aggie49!  You see, today's schools have the "zero tolerance" policy.  What a laugh!  If it's zero tolerance, then why wasn't the other kid who struck YOUR kid FIRST, suspended??  Been there, done that, don't miss it ONE BIT!  They sure didn't like it when I called and blasted the Asst. Principal, but tough luck!  Today's schools are looking for students who will OBEY without having to think about it.  They're not allowed to defend themselves.  They want these kids to scream and pee on themselves, instead.  Your daughter did the right thing!  She defended herself, and why shouldn't she?  I taught my kids never to raise their hands first but, should some smart a** come along and do it to them, CLOCK 'EM and make sure they'll think TWICE before they try it on you or somebody else ever again!

Every one should be treated the same. But it does seem that the one defending themselves are the ones being blamed and punished . Both should have been. My boys got into trouble for the same thing. But I will admit my oldest when beyond defending himself and threw the other boy into the garbage can where he belonged. My son had put up with this kid for months trying to ignore him. Both boys got into trouble then. one for starting it and one for ending it. But when a boy hits a girl and she gets into trouble and he doesn't that is really wrong.

To me school is unreasonable, they do what they think is right.

i agree with all of you my kid was just standing by the classroom door waiting for the class to start and the boy just walked up and smacked her so hard it left a bruise on her face and i am sorry but if i don't hit my child no one else will either i was raised to defend my self just as i have thought my kids so she hit him back and she got into trouble but he gets a way with it i don't think so i spoke with his parents and of course he is telling a hole different story but i told his parents i am pressing charges and they just said what ever well my whatever is he will get some kind of punishment

Call the police and press assault charges against him.

Bullying is not a good thing and the school should do more to protect the students, it doesn't work.

The silliest thing I read recently, was when a 9 year old boy was suspended because he told his classmates that he would make them disappear with his replica Lord of the Ring ring.

The kid's father went on record as saying he can assure everyone that his kid does not have magical powers, & can't make anyone disappear with a ring.  :D

I'm sorry for your situation, I would fight it with the school.  Get your local press involved, plaster it all over social media & let it go viral.    It's going to be a he said, she said unless you have witnesses. -- the boy's word should be no greater to the school than your daughter's word.   Why was one punished & not the other?  I definitely would fight that on principle alone.

My sons are grown now but we went through the same thing.  A boy that bullied them hit one of my sons over the head with a soda bottle (glass) in the bus loop.  There was a school employee there and because she was off duty and waiting for her husband to pick her up she didn't do anything.  Husband and I had a meeting with principal and she acted like a jerk so we removed our kids and home schooled them.  They took a vocational program at the local college when they were 16 and they passed the tabe test with flying colors.  Good luck with your situation I can sure understand your upsetment - it isnt right.

I understand fully what you are saying Aggie49. My 12 year old is bullied a lot for different reasons: Her hair looks like she didn't even brush it 15 minutes after We've done it, her religion, the fact that she attends a primarily black school and she is a white child, the list goes on. Back in October we had a call from the assistant principal. She had gotten sick of this one girl saying she was going to bring a brush to school and hold my daughter down and brush it and threatened the girl. My daughter was suspended while nothing was done to the girl who had been bullying her since August. And to make it worse this was the first time we were hearing about it cause our daughter never told us this was going on.

I actually documented things that were going on when my kids were in school, so I could SHOW them at the school the kind of crap that was going on.  Be careful, because if your kid is online in a forum or social website, the crap carries over there, too.  Make copies of it and hold on to it just for occasions like this one.  It happened to my son and this kid's father decided he was going to press charges.  Even the father physically attacked my son!  With the help of all of my documentation, they went down in flames in court!

I'm beginning to wonder why everyone doesn't home school their kids.  It takes away from the socialization but the schools are becoming a joke as far as an education goes.

Our schools all  seem to be pretty fair on issues. Haven`t heard nothing bad in a long time

That is terrible.  My mom is in education.  Some educators have forgotten that their role is to educate the children.
