TV Viewing via satellite, cable, Netflix/Hulu/etc.?
« on: March 12, 2015, 12:37:57 pm »
I have a Comcast bundle and every year, it goes up in price. For the past 3 years, I've been looking into using something else, but am so confused on what to get. This year, the cost went up to $173 a month and I can no longer afford it. It's to the point that a lot of shows are reruns and usually there is nothing on from Wed. through Sunday. Very boring. (Hubby, for some reason, doesn't want to watch ABC, NBC, or CBS).

I need to make a change but don't know to what or how. My son just got DishTV and he likes it. He said during the bad weather, he had no trouble with it. I see a lot of dishes around the town and the developments, but according to my son, the dish needs an "open area" and needs to face southwest with no obstructions.

We live in a 'hole," which I call a gully. On the east is a high cliff and then the street. On the west is a hill just as high as the cliff and our home is in between the two. The street goes up hill, too, about 1000 feet, and the south leads to an open valley below us. All four sides are also covered in trees.

Our 15 year old 32" TV blew a gasket a couple months ago from a power surge so hubby bought a 40" flat screen.

So, anyone know what I can do for TV, internet and phone?

I have dish network and like it.  I have a bundle package through CenturyLink.   I don't think they use dish anymore.  I have had mine for several years.

I live in a wide valley on the Rio Grande and I use antennae.  I refuse to pay for cable, but I can't afford it anyway.  There's more on broadcast than people think.  I like the sound of that Fire Stick Gary Busy does the commercials for, but I don't want another bill right now.  :-\

Why don't you drive around the neighborhood and see what everybody else has got. I'm sure whatever works for them, will also work for you. I'm also not happy with the price of my cable which is $176, but that is a bundle bill for my landline, cable, internet and we have 4 dedicated users!

I have basic cable which is way overpriced at $26 for about 10 channels, and I also have amazon prime (I got it on a deal, but it runs $99 a year now). i use a roku (purchase at walmart for $50) to stream prime shows and tons of free stuff, old tv shows and movies, you name it.

We live out in the country and when my mother built this house cable wasn't out here.  She had both major satelite co.'s neither of which had decent service.  Cable when it was out here was good but like your case kept going up in price - when my husband died 2 years ago I disconnected cable couldnt afford and got netflix.  $8.62 per month - we cant always watch the most up to date episodes but can buy them if desperate on playstation store so............we can live with that. Good luck with your decision.

Before cable, we had to use 2 antennas to get 3 broadcast stations and then the 3rd one was all snowy. It was crazy. We were glad for cable then. Even the valley that our road melts into is not very wide, maybe a mile and surrounded by mountains.

This is what my bundle consists of but there's only one internet user and that's me, plus only 1 TV.

There are 3 houses here and we're all on cable. At the top of the hill and in town is DirectTV or the Dish Network. I'm just wondering if those would work here in "the hole" surrounded by trees and steep hills, then mountains.

I think I'll read up on Hulu and Roku again. I did that before but got all confused. As for Netflix, I had a subscription with them a couple years back but it was only  for the computer.

My other son had a computer hooked up to his flat screen and when I tried talking to him about it, he avoided my questions. Don't know why or how he was hooked up.

I was wondering if I could do that with our new flat screen TV, but then I'd need to have the internet hooked up to that computer (in the other room) wouldn't I?  I'm very tech-ignorant lately. Things change too fast for me.

We had Comcast for years and finally had enough, the price just being one of the reasons. When we lived in UT we had Dish Network and it wasn't too bad. They were kind of flaky, I guess you could say. Something with the billing cycle. Since we moved to CO we have Direct TV and I really like them. We've continued to get TV through some pretty bad weather which is something we didn't always get with Dish.

I canceled my tv service after the price seemed to keep rising.  I felt like I'd rather spend that money on other things, so I got an antenna and subscribed to Hulu.  It was an adjustment at first, but I'm fine with it now.  I use Hulu more than anything else, but the antenna is nice on occasion, if I can get a good signal.

I also go to a few channel's sites to watch shows, if they're not available on Hulu.

I have Netflix as well, but I had that before and I don't use that as much since i'ts not new shows.
