Maybe they have new evidence or new technology they did not have back then.

I hadn't heard about this.  Sounds interesting though.  Technology has come such a long way since then, they definitely should be able to get a better understanding of that tragic crash.  I don't think it would be a waste of time considering lives were lost,  their families would probably like more information as to what really happened.

This is the first I am hearing of this, maybe some new evidence has surfaced using technology, that was not available at that time. Interesting after such a long time, guess we'll hear about the findings.

It was such a tragic & sad loss when it happened like so many plane crashes.

I havent heard anything on this yet.First i am seeing it here on FC.Another reason why i enjoy this forum.

Id be curious to know if they had some concrete info on why this happened even tho so long ago.

Problem is you dont know what you can believe. Will we ever know who killed JFK???

AOL news report:

NTSB MIGHT REOPEN BUDDY HOLLY CASE:

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board say the agency could reopen its investigation into the plane crash that killed musician Buddy Holly in 1959.

"The plane took off on Feb. 3, 1959, in heavy snow from the Mason City Municipal Airport in Iowa. It crashed into a field in the town of Clear Lake less than four minutes later," CBS reported.

The Des Moines Register reports L.J. Coon, a retired pilot in New England, is requesting the NTSB revisit its analysis of the accident. Coon wants the board to look into whether the small plane's rudder controls and fuel system played some part in the crash.

NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss told the Register: "Our cases are never closed, and we get these from time to time. The key is if there is new information not previously considered by the board."

The cause of the crash was originally ruled pilot error, attributed in part to snowy conditions. Holly, the pilot, and musicians Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson died in the crash.

Jeff Nicholas, who now owns the property where the plane went down, told KIMT others have prompted the NTSB to return to the case before.

"This happens periodically. There is just so much interest in the guys' legacy," he said.

A writer for Minnesota Public Radio is skeptical, though, saying, "The NTSB is nowhere near ready to reopen the investigation."

Either way, The Des Moines Register reports it could be several weeks before the NTSB arrives at its decision.

Pretty random considering there's plenty of open cases that should be tended to.

Thanx for the report LouLiz.

Of course the magnitude of who was on the plane makes it high profile.

But lemme ask this.they said plane took off in heavy snow.Theres NO way they do that today. So does it take a genius to call em dum*sses?

the case wasn't ever closed but I remember meeting him at my grandfather's home before the crash and I felt so bad because he was a good person and it made me cry.

Wow, as I type this, the Buddy Holly investigation pops up on CNN. Uncanny. Anyway, I have to agree with metsrock. I mean, honestly, what type of evidence can they discover after all of these years. As tragic as the fact that the case remains unsolved, I believe that we should let sleeping dogs (and those who perished in the crash) to lie/rest in peace.

Hmmm. I think this case is worthy of further investigation. Could be interesting.

I had not heard about that.  WHY?  Because people seem to love to rehash things over and over and over.
