Have you ever done volunteer work?
« on: February 17, 2015, 06:09:11 pm »
I'm thinking of doing just that this year and am still undecided what to do. My friend volunteers at a homeless shelter, but in a way I'd like to do something involving kids.

I helped a friend of mine in her classroom. She taught 1st grade. It was an interesting experience and it helped her out.

Yes, I volunteer at a nursing home.  Many residents have no one ever coming to visit them, so we volunteers talk to them, take them to activities, go to the gift shop/ice cream shop with them, or just be there for them.  They appreciate it so much.

It's a very rewarding experience. It's always nice to give back. However, I haven't volunteered any time lately, I've been way too busy trying to pay off debt of my own.

Yes I have done volunteer work in the past. I help at shelters for the elderly and it was quite rewarding. But since I retired it has been hard to do it but I miss it. As far as children I used to help out at preschools for the ages 3 to 5 and I really enjoyed that too.

Yes, I am actually currently doing so with my local American Red Cross. It is a very rewarding experience, suffice it to say. Unfortunately, my full-time job sometimes gets in the way of my dedication to this organization.

I was required to do volunteer work to graduate from high school. I have not done any other volunteer work after that.

I have been a volunteer for the American Red Cross, also.  I volunteer at our church.  I have done volunteer work in the past doing inside painting for elderly, taking meals to sick people, and staying with my brother for several months while his wife worked before he passed away.  I have volunteered at school while my daughter was attending.  My health is not so good as to volunteer very much right now, buy my husband is a volunteer at our local Hospice as a sitter with terminal patients.  To volunteer is to be rewarded far beyond the deed.  Before you say "I'm bored," find somewhere to volunteer.  You will be glad you did.

I used to do a lot when I was in HS such as doing hygiene bags for the poor, serving food at soup kitches, walking for cancer society, working with elders.

When I was a teenager, I volunteered with the special Olympics and also volunteered at a local blood drive.

I used to volunteer for the united way, the battered womens shelter and mad plus various club happenings, but now I do not as my back and other things will not let me do a whole lot. Getting older or older sucks. also their is not as much to do in a very small town and it is very clickish, which I do not like. There are handful that think they are the only ones who can do it and will not let anyone else try to.

Does your area have the 4-H Program? or Girl Scouts? or does your school need "buddies" for children whether it is to spend an hour or so just being with the child or perhaps as a reading buddy to help the child read or homework.

Churches can usually use volunteers to help with after school programs or summer Bible School.

Hospice Cottages may need a caring person to volunteer.

When I was first married and had young children, I volunteered a lot. I helped direct the improvement of a school library, and had class parties for my kids' birthdays.

Now I volunteer for the Red Cross by being a volunteer who helps people check in to give blood. I give blood as well if you count that. I always enjoy being with people while I'm volunteering.  :angel11:
