When someone tells you something that is going on at work, do you keep it to yourself or gossip?

I really do! Sometimes I am bursting to say something, especially if it conflicts with something else that is going on. But in truth, I always keep it to myself. If I felt so strongly that a story should be told I would try to convince the person that told me the secret my concerns.

Depends on the situation? If you're not bourse talk to a third party. Even a Dr can help.  But sometimes even if you do everything right it's not always helpful! If you know where I'm going?

I learned a long time ago, keep my mouth shut.   Once everyone else starts talking about the latest I'll join in but until then, mums the word for me.

It depends on what it is, I could go gossip if it is something fun then I go and say something, but if it is something serious such that I learned that someone is going to be fire or laid off then I keep quiet

I'm ashamed to say I listen.  :-[ But I try desperately hard not to pass it on.  :angel11: It's really not fair to pass on hearsay.

After all, the person who's being talked about doesn't have a say in whether or not the gossip is true or distorted in some way.

I try not to get involved in the company gossip.  I know I get talked about a lot.  People are stupid and nosy.  My life is no one's business and I could care less about their life.  But here is the thing to remember.  A person who will gossip WITH you will gossip ABOUT you.  So if they are talking about Sally and John to YOU then they are talking TO Sally and John ABOUT YOU.

I learned at a very early age to not gossip.  If they are talking about some one then they may well very well be talking about you to someone else. I worked in a care team and heard of lot and never repeated it to anyone else. It was sorta like what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. A lot of people have a lot of problems that do not need to be repeated anywhere else. I made a good sounding board for a lot of employees. I also knew when to send them to a counselor or where to go for  example battered women.  Lots of names and numbers on my rolodex. But to repeat it no.

When I worked in an office I didn't spread any gossip that came my way.  I see no value in it - reminded me a lot of shallow girls in high school.  The only time I would have ever considered telling what I heard was if I ever hear gossip that would have gotten the company in trouble or someone hurt - but I never heard anything like that.

Flowergirl, I don't know where you're going because I don't know what you said.  What is "bourse" - or am I missing something?

I keep it to myself and try to discourage the sharing of gossip in other people..  Office gossip can only lead to bad things and increases the amount of drama within an already drama-filled situation.  Half the time the gossip is only half true and involves the smearing or slandering of someone's name which leads to false impressions and expectations of that person.  I sometimes think that the purveyors of gossip do not have enough to do but it is typically the people that are struggling to complete their goals and work that are spreading the gossip.  If they spent one tenth of the time spent on gossip actively working at their jobs they would have no problem completing not only their tasks but additional work that could possibly make the company more profitable.
