smelly garbage
« on: February 01, 2015, 07:02:48 am »
we have both regular garbage and recycled trash in our apartment building.
both can be smelly and both can get mixed up.
there is only one best place for garbage  - outside.

You are right. I don't like the kitchen garbage to stay inside very long. Especially if it has meat or veggie waste. I used to have a compost pile for the organic stuff, but left that house. When I get another place of my own, I will start that again. It makes great material for plants.

Our regular garbage is collected once a week and our recycling is collected once every two weeks. I used to keep both trash containers in our garage so that I didn't have to go outside to put something in it but in the last few months, especially over the hot summer, I noticed our regular garbage smelling really bad. Initially I tried cleaning the trash container and that worked for a few weeks, but eventually it started to smell again. It got to the point where I even thought the smell was coming into our house so I decided to take the regular garbage outside. This has worked brilliantly for me, even though I now have to go outside to put trash in the container.

Take out the kitchen garbage often, at least once a day to help with the odor killing.

Agreed lol garbage can be very smelly - recently our can got knocked over by a bear and he/she scattered garbage all the way across the yard.  What a mess !  We live in a rural area though with a lot of woods behind us so its the price you pay for not having a lot of neighbors which suits me.

Totally agree...garbage can be really smelly..lol. We empty our trash in the chute every day and i think it gets picked up 2x a week. I don't have to go by there so I dont notice it.

I put our garbage in a plastic bag tie it, before put it in the garbage can, that way it trap the smell a little longer.

Somehow I can smell the garbage in my kitchen and am the only one that reminds my kids to take it outside. But I don't know why my kids can't smell that. The garbage truck comes every week. I do go to my in-laws and grandma and the first thing I smell is exactly that. Maybe sometimes people get used to the smell that they don't realize it but only a stranger can smell them when they go into someone else's home.

Hubby takes our garbage out 2-3 times a week depending on what goes into it. I have a compost pile for every thing except meat, dairy . but all veggies goes into it. Really is good for the garden.

I couldn't live with garbage inside the house--it all goes in trash cans outside (recyclables go in their own can outside) until pick-up day.
