it depends how much stuff I have....if it's not a lot, I don't mind, but if it's a lot, it can be a bit annoying...it's not the fact that the bar is there to divide items, it's the fact that people don't give you space and make you feel rushed....that and people who really lollygag through the whole process...I don't mind people taking your time, but acting like no one else needs the machines is rude...

Grocery stores can be quite nerve racking especially "Wal-mart Super Stores" as they get so crowded and sometimes there are not enough checkers, or customer issues, slow checkers, etc., etc.  My wife and I normally go shopping together and she can get quite irritated and I don't do well in crowds.  We however have never had crowding issues. but many nightmarish customer issues.  There was once a food stamp lady with kids that purchased about her whole monthly allotment Just under $300 worth with a long list of coupons and price matches as they will match prices of other stores in order to offer the same or lower price.  Evidently not all items even food items can be purchased with food stamps and after scanning all the items came to find out that she owed $12 cash and only had $4.  They had to go through the items one by one to figure out what food stamps did not cover.  It was a nightmare!  I would have paid the $8 buck difference but I didn't have my wallet as my wife just picked me up from the hospital so she had the cash & credit but was not about to pay!  They had so much food that I asked if they were having a large party or just stocking up!  I guess that was just how they bought groceries "each month".  Needless to say we just got in a new line.  They must have taken an hour to figure it out!  We had gone through another line and were out the door.  I felt bad but it was their fault and you can't always get something for nothing.  Some of these coupon shoppers can really be irritating.  We don't coupon shop but I am sure one can save a lot of money and food is so spendy nowadays.

I think using the dividers takes care of the problem.  What irritates me are other things...like not paying any attention that a person is taking up an entire aisle between where they are parking their cart and their own position, or people that strike up a conversation with the cashier and neither appear aware that there is a line of people waiting to get out of the store.  Both of these things happen way too much...at least to me.
Oh, and people rarely apologize when they are blocking the way.  More frequently, I get a somewhat nasty look and an attitude of..."I'm the important one here and it is my right."  I think many of us need to be much more civil nowadays.  I also hate to say it (because I am no "Spring Chicken" as they say), but it is often some sour-pussed older person (50 and above).

I did this to someone at the store the other day. The lady was literally just talking to the cashier so i thought she was done, i put up the divider thing and started unloading my stuff. Well this lady looked at me and totally snapped that she wasnt done, i looked at her and nicely said oh i am so sorry i didnt see the rest of the stuff in your cart and she rolled her eyes, the cashier rolled her eyes and i stopped unloading. it took all of me not to say well... stop talking and finish unloading!

That would depend on if I still have lots of stuff on the counter. If they put that bar that separates the food then I am okay with it.

I appreciate a good rant. However, I don't think this is a worthy rant. Throw the divider up and relax.  Take a moment and engage in conversation with your fellow man.  Give someone a compliment. Discuss the weather.  Stop and smell the roses.

Different people have different pet peeves.  People are in a hurry and they need to get everything done and be everywhere NOW.  I've unloaded my things, as a way of keeping everything flowing.  There are no rules about doing this or not doing this.

I have a pet peeve about clerks or cashiers trying to make small talk with me when I want to focus on the transaction.    I don't like being distracted and I don't need them to pretend to be my best friend.

Have a great day!

When you are checking out at the grocery store, why do people start unloading their stuff before you finish yours and your transaction. So  irritating!!!!
Places like Walmart have the divider to put up so you can go ahead and put your stuff up there.  I never wait until the person in front of me is completely finished with their transaction.  And at the grocery store the cashier gets the stuff out of the buggy not me.

Well I think it makes sense that you start to unload your groceries onto the conveyor belt so that as soon as the person in front of you has checked out and paid, the Associate can start to scan your items. That way, the Associate (and you) don't have to wait longer than is necessary to load items. Having said that, there has been numerous occasions when, whilst in the process of loading my groceries into my cart, the customer behind me has stood in front of the card swiper so that I cannot get back to it to pay. I usually politely say 'excuse me' and not only they reverse up but so does everyone behind them.

the only time I can see this as an issue is when there is no room on the check-out counter - other than that not a problem.

I can only speak for me...  I wait until the person before me has all their items on the belt, add the bar, then unload mine.  I use my own bags and coupons so if I'm not fast enough the clerk will start filling plastic bags miss the coupons or a price match...  I will sort of make an exception if I'm carrying something heavy and/or frozen; then I'll rest it on the metal end behind the belt.  I've never had anyone start unloading before I've gotten all my items on the belt.

Maybe things are done differently in different parts of the country but I am truly confused here.  I have no idea why it would bother you and I would find it extremely weird if they did wait until I was done.
