Do you call your parents by their first names?
« on: November 02, 2014, 12:48:15 am »
I don't.  I think that''s disrespectful.  My brother does it sometimes and I just want to punch him in the throat when he does.  Some people don't mind and if that's fine with them great.  We didn't grow up like that so I don't know why he thinks it's ok just because we're adults.  You should still have respect.

I have an Uncle who called his parents by their first name but he did it to be comical and his parents got a kick out of it but behind the scenes he would call them Mom and Dad. He would do that to aggravate my Aunt. Maybe your brother does it to pee you off? lol ... siblings can be treacherous! Believe me, I know! lol... Anyhow, hope you have a bless Sunday! :angel11:

I think it is disrespectful. Your parents are not your peers. They are in a position of authority.
You may develop a great relationship with them as an adult. Still, they will always have a vertical position above you.

I don't. I still call them mom and dad. It's just weird calling them by their first name because you've never really done it your whole life.

I always called my parents mom and dad.  When I was dating my husband I called his oarents by their first names, and my husband called my parents by their first names.  When we got engaged we asked both sets if we could call them mom and dad also.  They both were happy, and from then on we stopped calling them by their first names and referred to them as mom and dad too.

Even when I was mad at my parents, I never called them by their first name.

I agree with you 110%!  I wouldn't dream of calling my parents by their first names.  It's impersonal and my parents mean so much more to me than just a friend.  If I were you, I would punch your brother in the throat.

I called my mom by her first name the last two years of her life, with no disrespect intended. She had Alzheimer's, and declared that I was too old to be her daughter.

I did try calling my dad by his first name once, when I was in my 20s. My dad raised one eyebrow and asked, "So, I don't get to be Daddy anymore?" I thought about that, and never called him anything but Daddy again.

My parents are both deceased but I was in my late 50's when my mom passed and I still called her mom.  My nephew calls his mom (my sister) by her first name and it is definitely showing her disrespect - he is a jerk - my sister had problems when he was young so he does it to hurt her.

I wish I just talk to my mom and dad,,,,,   they have both passed away and I miss them so terribly much.  I don't think I could call them by their first names.  They were my mom and dad.   they need to be addressed as MOM and DAD :)
