do water filters really work

I buy water or filter it.  I've used a Brita water filter pitcher and I like it as long as I refrigerate my water after filtering it.  I can't prove that it works; however, it's good for me psychologically to know that I'm making the effort.  Drinking water is important so it's important, to me, to alter the energy and taste so it's very drinkable.

My first choice is to buy purified water.
