Looking for work after age 50
« on: October 20, 2014, 02:21:23 pm »
I've been unemployed for sometime now, more or less my choice. I'm writing, getting a few things published, a few on line activities, but that's it. Lately, I've found myself putting in applications for positions I wouldn't have thought about normally. The extra money is much needed, but we are managing. Here's the question of the day. Is it better to hire a younger worker or a more seasoned one?

a more seasoned one in my opinion --young workers just want a lil money to party on the weekends and a seasoned working needs the job to support a family --pay bills --put food on the table --

Most employers like hiring young people. They will often do anything for their employer because they are grateful and idealistic. They are quicker at learning most things.

Older people have a lot to give. They have skills from a lifetime of learning and truly believe in hard work, not in being owed something. Lots of employers avoid hiring older people.

Truth is they both groups have lots to give and in a perfect world, all would be given a chance to work together and learn from one another.  :angel11:

It is best to hire the person most qualified to do the job. Doesn't matter if they are young or old.

You have to make your own sunshine. Some companies will hire you, while others not.

[/quote] Depends on the job and the applicants.  Look at the backgrounds.  Yes, younger people will learn some things quicker, but older workers may often time already know it.  I have noticed that a lot of younger people do not know how to do customer service.  But they can learn.

It depends on how much they wanna work or how bad they want it cause it doesn't matter about your age there hard young workers an hard older workers so it's a mix of both

A more "seasoned" worker, in my opinion, is the way to go simply because they are more reliable.

I think it depends on the individual person. Some hire for more experience and some hire for less they have to pay.

I used to work in recruitment many years ago and I found it quite eye opening how employers would respond to the age thing. Some employers would steer away from the older generation because they felt it would be difficult to ask them to do menial tasts. Some employers found it difficult delegating to more seasoned workers especially if they had been in more powerful positions previously. Other employers didn't like to employ anyone too young because they felt the younger generations were less stable, less likely to stay when the going got tough, they were also cheaper to employ and more ambitious. My experience however taught me that the seasoned workers are more reliable, they have widsom and experience beyond the younger generations and are less likely to throw the towel in when the going gets tough. All things considered, since I left recruitment things have changed enormously within the workplace. We now consider the strengths and skills of the individual rather than age and consider each applicant on their own merits.

It depends. if I won the lotto, I would stop working at the age of 50 or even before that. If not, I have no choice but to continue working.

a more seasoned one would be the best..but most companies want the younger ones..they think they will have less downtime with them..most think the older ones are constantly sick..i had much prefer to work with an older one..no offense to the young kids..
