I just got a Mac from Best Buy.  I think I got a good deal on it.
Ask for manager specials.

Generally I do some in store stuff like figuring out which I like the feel of (either keyboard wise or whatever features are important to you), maybe ask them some questions about it to see what they would recommend based on what you normally do, then check stuff on line to see where the good prices our.  The first computer I got was straight from the companies site, the second was a like new from eBay, my mom and sister got their's off a TigerDirect sale, and now I'm looking at getting my new one off Amazon.

Two years ago, I got a refurbished Dell laptop and a Dell pc (monitor, keyboard, mouse & subwoofer/speakers) for $150 including shipping.  I have used both alot, every day and they still work GREAT...no problems.   (Just when buying off ebay, make sure the seller has alot of great feedback, a hassle-free return policy and you know exactly what you need/are looking for in a computer.)

Your best bet is to learn how to do it yourself this way you control what goes into it and you can do with it long run

Wal-Mart. $200 for a brand new laptop. I usually suggest waiting until mid-November for the best deals!

Bought mine on HP's website. Quite a wait, but it's worth it.

I would go to Best Buy.  Big selection...store employees not on commission...they will really listen to your needs and find you compatible selections.  I got my computer at Walmart....convenient and cheap...didn't get as big a selection and my needs were met...just saying I think Best Buy has some of the best customer service around.

For a desktop, I'd rather just built it myself. For a laptop, Fry's or Newegg.com are pretty good choices.
