victims of a scam
« on: October 11, 2014, 08:19:16 pm »
I was always of the mindset that it would  be hard for someone to run a scam on me.  well now I know that I can't be too sure of myself since we almost got scammed by a call from someone pretending to be the IRS.  They were very convincing and we almost got caught on guard.

Good thing you caught it.  I am currently doing a project with a Financial Investigation Unit analyzing possible money laundering schemes and am amazed at how many people fall prey to romance, lottery, IRS, and inheritance scams.  My father, an attorney of thirty five years, sent twenty five hundred dollars to a friend that he thought was being held in a Parisian jail. The scammers had had hacked his phone, found a friendly name, and called him at two in the morning when they new he would be groggy-and pretended to be his friend complete with crying.  He got up, went to the store, and used a money transfer service to send the money. He called the friend the next day  and found out he had been scammed. He was more embarrassed at being a victim then anything.

The IRS wouldn't make initial contact by phone so that's usually the first sign it's a scam.

I got that same call 3 times. I figured if the IRS wanted me they would send an official letter not an automated phone message.

In dealing with the IRS for several years as an accountant's assistant, I hve to say that that is a scam. They never contact by phone first, always mail.  And 9 times out of 10, if dealing with the IRS, calls are rarely made, sometimes they come to your house.. But like others said, it's always mail.  They have too much to do to make phone calls.

You have to find out why you have been denied. Send a support ticket to FC
and ask them why you were denied. Then, you can take the issue
from the answer.
