What do you think about this?
« on: August 18, 2014, 06:11:50 am »
The cable and satellite companies want to stop the flow of antenna TV because they claim that TV shouldn't be free. What do you think? Should they make people who don't have the money pay for TV programming in order to view their programs?

No. I think free TV should be available to anyone who wants to go through the hassle of watching TV with an attena which is often unreliable when bad weather strikes. Pay TV should be an option for anyone who wants more reliable service and specialized programming.

I thought I heard during the Aereo Supreme Court hearing media updates that the major networks are required to provide over-the-air broadcasts - some FCC rule on the books.  I heard CBS threatened to pull their broadcasts if Aereo won the case, and I wondered if they would be allowed to do so.

I think the issue is the original model of how television transmissions would pay for itself is that advertisers bought time to show their ads to those watching, and that would pay for the transmission fees.  However, in today's world where people can fast forward through commercials on shows DVR'ed, or find them streaming online - that advertisers are finding their commercials are not being viewed.  Cable originally was supposed to have minimal advertising as the paid subscription was to cover those costs - obviously that didn't last long.

My theory of why advertising has much less impact today than when everything was over-the-air is that we are so saturated with advertising - television, radio, bill boards, magazines, smartphones, internet... - that advertising has become white noise in our lives - we just tune it out.  I think companies need to find a more effective way to get people's attention than overplaying tired ads.

Last year, when editing shows for a contest, I found several comedies and dramas where there would be 4.5 minutes of ads, followed by a 2.5-3 minute clip of the show, followed by another 4.5 minutes of ads.  That's just nuts!

Some people cannot afford satellite or cable TV so local TV should remain free but if the advertising won't cover the cost then it is going to be a problem and local free TV will most likely have to have a small fee to cover their cost.  If a person can afford a TV they should be able to afford a small fee for that.

I canceled my cable and now I use the antenna for news and NetFlik for the rest along with a few pay on demand deals on my Roku.

I really hoped they don't do that. For the people who cant afford all of that. That is just unfair.

If they are going to charge for TV, they can take off the ads like they do in the UK.
Here we are are bombarded with ADS, that should offset the price of the tv programs.   Or how about not giving television actors 2 million per episode, actors are a dime a dozen.   Hollywood is not hurting for money.

I think there should be some free tv, for those that have little money, are on a fixed income, or just have no interest in all the countless channels on cable tv.

I think this would make most people life harder.  I think it doesn't matter because cable has new movies vs antenna TV has all the old movies
