What get's in the way of family meal time?
« on: August 02, 2014, 04:55:52 am »
My family of 5 has experimented with family meal time over the 16 years with a variety of attempts to eat together.  It seems there is always something that get's in the way.  ie: schedule conflicts, sickness, power outages.  It seems there is always something causing us to adjust our family dinners.  I remember growing up being super busy and on nights we had to rush to the ball field or the gym my Mom still made dinner so we could all sit at the table for just 5 - 10 min.  What get's in the way of your family meals?

Even when the 12 year old has lessons from 5:30-7:30 once a week we still eat together even if it is at taco Bell or something like that.

The type-A mindset of my entire family keeps us from having frequent Family dinners/get togethers. My daughter is in her Senior year and is a band leader, DECA president, Tennis Captain, plays competitive club soccer and is taking all AP (4.50 grade point average) classes. My son volunteers for charity at least seven hours a week, has tennis and lacrosse seven days a week and goes to a private school which generally doubles the amount of homework they have to do. My wife has worked for the same corporation for the last thirty five years, and plays tennis three days a week. I work two full time jobs and have several projects going on at once in addition to working out six days a week. Kind of tough to find mutual time off.

I live by myself so my meals are whenever I feel like eating them.  When my kids were little our meals depended a lot on what the kids had going so we were always eating around their sports, dancing and other activities.  My husband never came home until late so he wasn't there to eat with the kids anyway.  Sometimes I ended up cooking 3 or 4 meals in the evening.

Phone calls, work, something good is on TV... but I can't complain. More often than not we find time to have a family dinner. (:

Not too much really under our current circumstances.  My two grown sons and I all work at home and eat our meals together.  However when they were growing up and my hubby was alive there were times we were scattered here and there at mealtime.

Differing schedules would be the biggest.  But when we all can sit around the table...it's very nice!

Sometimes time just gets in the way. We've been eating at the table a lot more recently, though.
