Random Question
« on: July 31, 2014, 09:11:17 am »
Just wondered what people's thoughts are on this situation.  I guess I don't expect honest answers cause everyone will say they would do the right thing.  But anyway.

You and your best friend/spouse/coworker/whatever get caught up in an illegal money making scheme.  You don't know it but the eyes of the law are upon you and they are watching and working on setting up both up to get caught.  Your friend gets caught more red handed but they know you are just as involved.  When taken to jail you are separated.  You can tell on your friend and clear yourself.  Your friend will get in more trouble than already in.  If you just take your medicine you will spend several years in jail.  But if you talk you will either walk away with probation or get off completely free.

Would you talk and clear yourself or stand by your friend?

Self preservation is my number one concern.  I'd clear myself.

This is an interesting question. What made you ask it? :)

Honestly, it depends on how close to this friend I am, how long I've known them, the emotional attachment, etc. Thinking now about my best friend (who I've known for 10 years), there is no way I could live with myself if I sold her down the river like that. It would eat away at me and I know the friendship would most likely be irreparable. If you're going to get into something dangerous like that together, you might as well stick together when it blows up in your face.

If it's just a coworker, I'd clear myself. If it's someone I loved, I know nothing at all. I've recently had a concussion, and I still think it's 2011.

no rats allowed

my dad told me never to call the police unless i find a dead body, and never to tell on anyone.

if you're  guilty for what you did, you should do just as much time as your friend

Lets take it a step furthur!!

Did Joe Paterno know what Sandusky did?I understand he would  wanna protect him and his own image!!

It was a horrible sin in Gods eyes!He shoulda stopped him or turned him in what happened and by the accounts he did.I am sure that contriubted to his passing away very fast.

The kids involved were swept under the mat!!Truth is truth!!

The question you ask here  is would you squeal on your friend. If you were ignorant to begin with you tell the truth you were for them as well as yourself. As well as tell the truth if you knew!!

I think the bible gives a good account what truth is when Pilate asks Jesus what it is.....
THAT question was cynically posed to Jesus by the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate. He was not interested in an answer, and Jesus did not give him one. Perhaps Pilate viewed truth as too elusive to grasp.—John 18:38.
This disdainful attitude toward truth is shared by many today, including religious leaders, educators, and politicians. They hold that truth—especially moral and spiritual truth—is not absolute but relative and ever changing. This, of course, implies that people can determine for themselves what is right and what is wrong. (Isaiah 5:20, 21) It also allows people to reject as out-of-date the values and moral standards held by past generations.
The statement that prompted Pilate’s question is worth noting. Jesus had said: “For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.” (John 18:37) Truth to Jesus was no vague, incomprehensible concept. He promised his disciples: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”—John 8:32.
Where can such truth be found? On one occasion, Jesus said in prayer to God: “Your word is truth.” (John 17:17) The Bible, written under divine inspiration, reveals truth that provides both reliable guidance and a sure hope for the future—everlasting life.—2 Timothy 3:15-17.

I agree. It would depend on how close I am to my friend and if I would trust them enough to know that they're not gna sell me out or try to put all the blame on me.

If I didn't know what was going on then there's really not much to say. But I would be honest about what I did or didn't do and explain how I ended up in the situation. If I knew what was going on I would be just as guilty as the other person, unless they engaged in further illegal activities then I'm not going to take the blame for something I didn't do.

I am going to try to respond to all in one post.  We will see how that goes. lol

skinnym - In the situation I am describing the pair were in it together.  Totally and completely.

haimsterette- Husband and Wife.

silentescape- So if you and a coworker were both stealing from the company or doing some illegal activity to make extra money and you were both in on it together totally and completely in on it together - you would throw your coworker under the bus and clear yourself and let you coworker go down for all of it if you could be the first one to talk and tell on the other?  Not being smart just asking a question.  Honestly, whether they will admit it openly or not when it comes to facing years in jail most people would do the same thing.

acurtsinger2- I agree.  If you are guilty too and you reaped the benefits while they were coming in then it is not fair to rat out the other person and let less or no time.  Although it happens all the time.

hitch0403- According to the Bible we should ALWAYS be truthful and we should not have been in the illegal money making scheme to start with :)

babyturtles23- True.  But if you were not close to the person you probably would not get involved in illegal activity with them because it does require trust on both parts that the other is not going to tell on you.   But most of the time (especially in cases of work place things) if you get caught the person will do whatever to clear their own name and if somebody else is sold out or goes to jail then it's like oh well I am free.

ShadeTree- I think you missed what I said or I was not clear.  Both people (actually husband and wife) were in on it.  She was involved all the way although he actually done the actual physical dead more than she did.  She was totally involved and she reaped the benefits (the money made) but when they got caught she threw him under the bus trying to keep herself out of jail.  She told the police things (they both were involved in) but that they were not aware of furthering the offenses of her husband.  I just think that is wrong.  If your husband steals stuff and you sell it for cash you are both involved.  Just because he is the one who actually took the stuff from a house or a store does not make him more responsible.  She was the one who sold it.  But when the police caught them she told on him for everything and has totally turned her back on him.

So the reason for the question - I just wondered what other people thought about  that and what people would say they would do.  I would like to think if I were ever involved in something like that I would not turn my back on my family especially if I was just as guilty.  I guess you don't know until you are in the situation and facing 10 plus years in jail.

I just wanna add,we are all guilty i guess sometimes taking the law in our own hand or deciding whats good and bad.EX..you get a ticket from a cop thats a jerk and of course you dont wanna pay it.So i guess its best to plead your case and hope you get a judge that understands.

Again the saying "we reap what we sow"can never be denied.

Honest mistakes are different than willful sins!!

I would like to think I would do the right thing and tell the truth about everything weather or not I get in trouble.  If I was apart of something I wouldn't want someone to do my time.  I seen this happen more than once with my brother.

IT doesn't really matter what you say you would do because when the time comes and something like that really does happen what is the first thing  they are going to do? Split you up.. And i have seen enough to know.. they will do whatever it takes to get the truth out of you even lie to you and make deals with you that sound  good but are the kind of deals that you will never see..If you save yourself thats all fine and dandy but what's gonna happen to the person you ratted out? Jail is not a place you really want to be so i am pretty sure they will be scheming against you while they are in there and the guilt eats up at you.. Unless your a cold hearted person which you won't care but will probably result in the end of your life...Turning yourself in if you did it is a wise choice but will you actually do it when the time is right? Probably not... Truth is you will not really know what your going to do until something like that happens.. If you do think so.. you are only fooling yourself.. Also you can think what you want about most of your friends but truth is if your in trouble and they aren't the only thing on most of their minds is clearing themselves :).. Also lieing or not the truth will catch up with you eventuntually Justice Will Be Served And it will be served on a cold plate XD

The Truth Prevails Just you wait and see
