sister in law
« on: July 23, 2014, 07:52:56 pm »
Just gonna vent a bit. My sister in law, my husbands brothers wife made a comment to my mother in law that just shocked me beyond belief! My niece had received her grades, 3 D's and 4 F's. My mother in law told my niece that she really needed to try to improve her grades or her job prospects after graduation would not be good or college options either which I agreed with my mother in law about. My sister in law gets defensive and says that she doesn't care about my niece's grades as long as she is popular in school...WTF!! how shallow, and sooo wrong! not to mention what kind of example to give to her daughter!!
SMH...

Wow, just Wow.
She's not going to be able to graduate with those grades.
The school should investigate that family, no offense, but something is definitely wrong with the psyche of a student who doesn't apply themselves & gets Fs & Ds.  Or she has a learning disability.    Red flags for the school district, at least here in CA.  They would be investigated.

That is shocking but not surprising. There are a lot of bad people in the world who should have never been parents and your sister-in-law is one of them.  >:(

Fortunately sooner or later your niece is going to wish she had listened to your mom when she gets a cold hard dose of reality.

The reaction here was definitely surprising for me.  Bad grades has always been a mark with my family and any others I can think of. Popularity at school superceding education is something I would have expected more from the niece to say than an adult.

It will be very hard for her to get into a good college or university.  Grades tell how well one does in High School.

Grades in high school are what lasts; popularity fades away!  Does your sister-in-law have no common sense?

She may be popular in high school, but will she be popular in the "real" world.  Being popular isn't going to get you a good job, or any job for that matter.  Being popular isn't going to pay the rent or put food on the table.  Maybe your husband can talk to the father, man to man, and get her to start studying and applying herself.  In this day and age you need college for most jobs, at her rate she won't even get out of high school.

The attitude many parents have these days is a disgrace.  And the way our youth exhibits there behaviors is much of a reflection of how the kids are cared for and taught.  Certainly this child has gifts... in some way shape or form.  Maybe not scholastically but seeing as how her education isn't being enforced her potential is unrecognized.

No wonder her grades are like they are if that is the type of support she gets from her mother!  The one thing I did when my daughter was in school was to encourage (and reward) the good grades.  She graduated valedictorian of her class and received a full all-expense paid academic scholarship to the University of Kentucky.  Ten years later and she is still in school (already has two bachelor & two master degrees) ~ going after her PhD with a 4.0 gpa!  Her plans are to be a professor at the University of Kentucky.
Have a wonderful day!

How old is your niece?  Grade school?  High school?  She ain't gonna be too popular when she fails a grade and gets left behind her "friends".  Oh wait, thanks to the no child left behind the school is not allowed to fail a kid any more.  Chances are her popularity will get her through life.  She will get a job given to her because somebody likes her or other things I will keep to myself. lol.  I am surprised that with grades like that she is popular.  Usually the ones who make horrible grades are not that popular.

I have 2 answers.
1. She may have said that because she wants to be a beeach about the situation and is embarrassed because she doesn't take time with her kid.
2. She may not have enough sense to help the child and she probably had the same kind of grades when she was young.

Solution.... the brother may need to talk with his brother about his daughter because I am sure he does not want his kid growing up thinking school is not needed and good grades are for loser's.

Yes, I so agree.  This was wrong, so, so wrong.  She really is not headed to any good college or much of a future on the road she is on.  And being someone's stay at home wife is not as good as it sounds.  Popularity?  Really?  How many of our high school friends are really life long friends?  Odds are only if we go to school in and stay in small towns.  Yes, wrong answer and I would have had to have spoken up.

That's just disgusting! You should teach a child confidence on their own, not to depend on others to value their worth! Maybe you could have a one on one talk with your niece.

That must of been a low life mother. I don't understand how a mother can sleep with her child having those grades in school.

Maybe you can post her child's photo and report card on Facebook along with a picture of the proud mother. That should get them most popular. See how many likes they get.

But wait, NO ! that child needs help!

No child left behind? I don't know about that, my son is being forced into passing the STAAR test or else he WILL get detained. He does not want to stay behind so he is giving it all he got and I am supporting him as much as I can.
