Windows Tip
« on: July 19, 2014, 07:10:41 am »
I still have Windows XP with no plans to change it soon, so I was happy to discover a new trick to make my time go easier.

I keep folders on my desktop with current projects to try to stay more organized and not forget them and I always right clicked to get to Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) until I recently figured out a new shortcut.

Now I click the Start button and click on My Documents, then click the folder icon with the green up arrow and I'm there.

OK, so I get excited easy, but I have used it hundreds of times already and it just makes me want to keep XP even longer.

Hey, I wouldn't knock XP, either!  It was a good OS.  There's still millions of people out there using it.  Only reason I upgraded to 8.1 is because my computer was already 12 years old and upgraded as far as I could take it.  I have the need for speed and my oldie just couldn't provide it.  I am happy to say that even as old as it was, it STILL WORKS and I refuse to get rid of it!

I still have a Windows XP desktop, and I don't plan on giving it up. I have programs on it that never were upgraded for newer systems. I think that was the best Windows OS, although I do like a lot of things about Windows 7. I'm dreading the day when my laptop dies and I have to get Windows 8.
Thank you Oldbuddy for the tip. I keep everything in folders as well, so that'll be a time saver for me.

I use the "folder shortcut on the desktop" trick a lot on all my machines - home and work.  Just makes it so much faster to get to those buried folders you always go to.

I even use the same technique to put shortcut links to documents I frequently use straight on the desktop to.  Anything to save time.

My only problem was I was creating so many shortcuts on my desktop, it was getting harder to find all of them mixed up with all my installed applications.  That is until I found the application called "Fences" by Stardock.  Great program that lets you create little windows on your desktop and drag items into the window - the window becomes scrollable when more icons are inside the "fence" than can be seen.  It really cleans up the desktop.  You can label each "fence" area so you can group things how you need for faster finding.

windows XP was a good operating system and more easier to learn, but I do like the new technology.

To save Ten Bucks I can get along with the free folders that come with Windows.

If you can keep XP, do it because I really have problems with Windows 8.  I don't like it at all.

I'm curious, can you tell me what kind of problems you have Win 8?  Is it just the layout you can't get used to, or is it something major?

i really think windows 8 sucks big time !!!!  i hated it so bad i went back to my vista  lol  gave the new computer to my other half.  he hates it also but he is learning to live with it,  he needed a newer computer anyway.  I just could not get windows 8 to do anything i wanted it to do and it would not take my email program either.  that was bad from the starr.

I don't understand why when they have to change things they have to make it so hard to figure out and then have to completely redo everything .   its terrible !!

Everyone complains about one simple issue with windows 8, the start button. There's multiple apps  to replace that and give you the XP/Win 7 feel all over again eg. (Classic Start Menu and it's free).
Windows 7 and 8 has shortcut options that enables you to have easy access to folders, docs, notes etc.
As for XP it was a great program, but Win 7 & 8 makes life way easier. For those with xp you could add the recent folders to your start menu by right clicking on the mouse then you'll have easy access to regular used folders. best regards.
